ZAYED UNIVERSITY TEAM WINS AT EDUCOM COMPETITION AND WILL GO TO KOREA
On Sunday, February 26, 2017, Sharjah City for Humanitarian Services (SCHS) organized the closing ceremony of AT EDUCOM competition for designing assistive applications at Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry. His Excellence Sheikh Fahim bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Chairman of the Department of Government Relations in Sharjah, is the patron of the closing ceremony. His Highness Sheikh Khalid bin Ahmed Al Qasimi, Director-General of the Department of Information and e-Government, and Mrs. Mona Abdel Karim, Deputy Director of SCHS, attended the closing ceremony. Students from Sharjah University, UAE University, Ajman University of Science and Technology, Higher Colleges of Technology - Sharjah Colleges, the American University in Sharjah, Khalifa University, and Zayed University competed in the competition.
The closing ceremony is the third and the final stage of the second round of AT EDUCOM competition, which SCHS Assistive Technology Center launched in October 2016, in cooperation with Seoul National University Quality of Life Technology QOLT Center, and the sponsorship of LG Electronics. AT EDUCOM aims at raising awareness between university students about the importance of assistive applications that support and assist people with disabilities. It aims at luring students into unleashing their creativity and create assistive applications that will enhance the quality of life for people with disabilities.
AT EDUCOM jury included His Highness Sheikh Khalid bin Ahmed Al Qasimi, Mrs. Rabab Abdul Wahab, Head of SCHS Assistive Technology Center, the pioneer Khaldoun Sinjab, Professor Sang-Mok Lee, Chairman of Quality of Life Technology QOLT Center, and Young-Jin Choi, Director of LG Office in the Gulf.
There were two stages before the closing ceremony. In the first stage, students submitted their applications. A special committee studied these applications and chose 48 students that formulated nine teams. In the second stage, 10 students from South Korea attended a special camp (CODE – CAMP) and joined efforts with Emirati students in designing assistive applications, which promote greater independence, under the supervision of Korean experts.
Her Highness Sheikha Jameela bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, Vice President of Supreme Council for Family Affairs & Director General of SCHS, has confirmed that SCHS vision in directing special humanitarian projects and programs to Emirati students aims at improving the quality of life to persons with disabilities and integrate them into society in order to become active members in its advancement.
SCHS has established Assistive Technology Center, which is the first of its kind in United Arab Emirates, in order to create a rehabilitative educational environment to persons with disabilities. It also aims at staying tuned with the latest trends and updates in the rapidly evolving world of assistive technology. SCHS will do its best in this field in order to achieve the required progress, which will have positive effects on the entire community.
For his part, Young-Jin Choi, Director of LG Office in the Gulf said, “We congratulate the winning team for this year. The team worked very hard to present unique solutions by using portable technology to help create a better world for persons with disabilities. In spite that there is only one winning team, everyone gained the necessary experience from this competition”. He praised participants’ efforts and wished them good luck in their life.
The members of the winning team deserved their award, which is a trip to the Republic of South Korea to present their app and share experiences. In addition, they will learn about the latest trends in assistive technology and will gain the necessary experience in order to innovate more in this field, which improves the quality of life to persons with disabilities by using assistive technologies in the most useful way. SCHS Assistive Technology Center will display students’ apps in (ATTOPIA) Assistive Technology Conference that SCHS is organizing from 9 to 11 march, 2017.
Notably, Zayed University team won the second round of AT EDUCOM competition for designing assistive applications for their app (Sighted). Sharjah University team won the second place for their app (Overcome). Khalifa University team won the third place for their app (Speak to me). Higher Colleges of Technology – Sharjah team won the fourth place for their app (My voice). As for the fifth place, it went to UAE University for designing (VOITION) app.
