Canadian Creativity Shines as LG Canada Contest Winners Announced

Winners awarded for coming up with Most Popular, Creative and Stylish name suggestions for the LG X120

Mississauga, July 3, 2009 – Following the launch of the small, sleek, sexy yet nameless LGX120, LG Electronics Canada turned to the Canadian public to help appropriately brand the device. Since the contest’s launch at LG Fashion Week in March, more than 9,000 Canadians have submitted entries and voted on their favourite suggestions. Today, LG Electronics Canada announced the results.

Of the 9,000 entries, a winner was chosen for each of these three categories: Most Popular, Most Stylish and Most Creative. The Most Popular name was determined through the number of votes it received online, while experts selected the winners for Most Stylish and Most Creative.

 “The ‘Whatchamacallit’ contest was a fun and unique way to engage Canadians with LG’s brand,” said Tim Barnes, Marketing Team Leader, Home Entertainment, IT and Commercial, LG Canada. “We were thrilled at the volume of entries we received, and were absolutely floored at the quality of the naming suggestions. It was no small feat for our judges to come up with winners.”

 

The winners are as follows:

 

Most Popular (based on number of votes): LG CYBER FRIEND

Most Popular Runner-Up: Silver X

Most Stylish: LG MiniBook

Most Creative: LG LoGo

 

Hans Koechling, President of The Image Is, chose the winner of the Most Stylish name. Koechling, a bona fide fashion expert, has worked with the most chic brands in the world, including Chanel, Pink Tartan and LG. The Most Stylish name was selected based on its catchiness and sophistication.

 

“LG MiniBook doesn’t sound too trendy, yet it’s hip and sophisticated,” said Koechling. “It works well for this product and is something I can see people really remembering.”

 

Kimberley Newport-Mimran, Co-Founder, President and Head Designer of Pink Tartan launched the LG X120 during a technology-infused fashion show at LG Fashion Week this past March. All three winners of the Whatchamacallit contest will receive an exclusive LG X120 skin designed by Kimberly.

Janette Ewen, a nationally recognized freelance writer and host, served as the judge of the Most Creative name, and used specific criteria for her selection.

“I love how clever some of the entries were,” said Ewen. “I definitely based my selection on the usage of interesting words and letter combinations, and was really attracted to entries that were focused on fun.”

 

The contest ran from March 18, 2009 to June 12, 2009 online at www.lg.ca/whatchamacallit. The first place winner for the Most Popular category wins an LG X120 plus $1,000. The first runner up in the Most Popular category, as well as the top choices in the Most Stylish and Most Creative categories each receive an X120.
