Super Multi Blue’ Player Meets Format War Challenge Head-On

LG Electronics launches industry's first dual-format high-definition disc player exclusively in Canada and U.S.

Blu-ray Player with HD-DVD Playback Capabilities Launched for First Quarter 2007 Availability

MISSISSAUGA, Jan. 7, 2007 --- Blending the latest technologies and offering unprecedented flexibility to consumers seeking the convenience of playing both Blu-ray and HD-DVD high-definition content, LG Electronics today launched the groundbreaking “Super Multi Blue” Blu-ray Player with HD-DVD playback capabilities at the 2007 International CES® (Booth #8214, Central Hall, Las Vegas Convention Center).

An industry first, this advanced Blu-ray player, LG model SMB-007, incorporates HD-DVD playback, making it the only player on the market with the capability to play both next-generation disc formats, addressing the challenge of the current format war. The SMB-007 will be available in Canada the first quarter of 2007.

“The ‘Super Multi Blue’ is a landmark product for LG and we’re very proud to be the first company in Canada to offer consumers the quality and convenience of a dual Blu-ray/HD-DVD player,” says William Cho, president and CEO of LG Electronics Canada, “This product will definitely bring a new level of performance to Canadian home theatre enthusiasts.”

The Super Multi Blue Player is the ultimate next-generation player, and is ideally suited to LG’s expanded lineup of full HD 1080p plasma and LCD HDTVs which deliver the best video possible at the highest display resolution format.  Available to Canadian consumers during the first quarter of 2007, the SMB-007 will be available first through Future Shop for an ERP of $1,499.

"Future Shop is known as the place to 'Get it First' for the latest and greatest technology available in Canada today", says Moe Amirie, Vice President Operations, Future Shop. "And we are very excited to be able to offer our customers LG's 'Super Multi Blue'. We believe this will be a very popular product, as it brings both innovation and convenience to any home theatre."

In addition to its support of both next-generation formats, the Super Multi Blue Player is also capable of up-converting standard DVDs to 1080i resolution, ensuring that consumers’ existing and future movie libraries will not be obsolete.  Offering full HD 1080p picture quality from high-definition discs, the player incorporates interactive functions based on BD-Java, which allows advanced menus and functions to be displayed over the video of Blu-ray discs.  And, while the same level of advanced menu interactivity is not available while playing HD DVD discs, the powerful combination of Blu-ray and HD DVD audio/video playback technologies is like no other on the market.

The unit supports various A/V formats, including MPEG-2, VC-1, H.264 video, MPEG1/2, Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital+, DTS and DTS-HD audio, and includes multiple inputs/outputs such as HDMI out, component / composite video outputs, and optical / coaxial / discrete 5.1 channel audio outputs, among others.  The strikingly designed unit incorporates elegant and easy-to-use backlit touch sensor buttons along with an illuminated remote control that deliver an effortless command of the next-generation home entertainment experience.
