Bottled water often contains more bacteria and impurities than tap water, because the EPA regulates municipal water systems more stringently than the FDA regulates bottled water. Water filters have made great strides in reducing the harmful contaminants found in drinking water; however, most filters also remove essential micronutrients, such as calcium and fluoride as well.
