Products Application

LG Electronics puts efforts to develop greener products in accordance with its product development strategies.

SEAD Global Efficiency Medal awarded CINEMA 3D TV ‘47LM670S’

LG Electronics' Cinema 3D Smart TV (Model: 47LM670S) won the Global Efficiency Medal in the Large-Scale TV (42" or over) and Emerging Technology section from the Super-Efficient Equipment and Appliance Deployment Initiative (SEAD). The awarded product improved energy efficiency by using the Local Dimming Technology that turns on the LED light, the minimized back light unit (BLU) installed only on the bottom of the product, and the Smart Energy Saving Technology that controls power consumption depending on the brightness around the product.

ENERGY STAR Qualification

ENERGY STAR is a certification program established by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Department of Energy to promote energy-efficient consumer products. Almost 500 LG Electronics’ product models were qualified ENERGY STAR in 2013, its number of Most Efficient models increase d by 55% from the previous year click here.

Product Carbon Footprint Management

LG Electronics encourages and facilitates our customers’ efforts to lead low carbon lifestyles by measuring the carbon footprint of a product (the total amount of carbon emissions associated with the product’s life cycle) and informing consumers how much GHG is emitted when they use a particular product. For more information about Carbon Footprint Certified model list visit Environmental Labels.

Product Life Cycle Assessment

Regulated by the ISO 14040 series standard, LG Electronics built the life Cycle Inventory Database for eight products which are TV, monitor, washing machine, refrigerator, LED lighting, solar module, mobile phone and commercial air conditioner system in 2011.
The graph below shows the result of the Carbon footprint for LGE’s major products.
In case of mobile phones, LGE discloses other LCA results.

In the product development phase, LG Electronics works to enhance material quality and product structure, and strives to improve product performance while reducing size and weight based on collaboration with recyclers. Based on such efforts, we were able to achieve a weight reduction of approximately 7% (12Kg) in our 2013 refrigerator model (Model: R-F914VBSM, offers 910 liters of effective capacity) compared to the previous year’s edition (R-U913LBRD).

10 Year Warranty on the Linear Compressor

The compressor in a refrigerator accounts about 80% of the energy consumption. LG Electronics confidently backs the motor with a 10-year limited warranty. LGE's unique linear compressor technology has fewer moving parts, which creates less friction and saves more energy.

10 Year Warranty and 20 Year Life Span on the Direct Drive Motor

LG Electronics’ innovative Direct Drive motor does away with the traditional belt and pulley system and offers a single, quiet mechanism attached to the drum itself and uses fewer moving parts and operates more efficiently, LGE confidently backs the motor with a 10-year warranty.

Also, the DD Motor has been certified by “VDE (Verband Deutscher Elektrotechniker)” - German Association of Electrical Engineers- as a product with a life span of 20 years, the longest yet to be certified by the VDE. The VDE has officially certified that LGE’s drum washing machine is capable of a total of 4,400 loads of laundry for 20 years (based on 4.2 loads a week and 220 loads a year).

In June 2012, LG Electronics introduced its Greener Packaging Design Guidelines to reduce the weight and volume and promote the reuse and recycling of packaging materials and initially implemented the guidelines for portions of TV and mobile phone products. With the new guideline, we were able to reduce the use of packaging materials for new products released in 2013 by 27.6% despite an increase in size for some products, while saving KRW 69.9 billion in costs. In 2014, LG Electronics plans to more broadly implement these guidelines to its overseas production subsidiaries.

LG Electronics utilizes packaging materials produced with FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified pulp and recycled pulp. In 2013, we conducted due diligence surveys on paper mills supplying packaging paper stock to LG Electronics and created a database listing FSC certified pulp content and recycled pulp content of each paper stock. Based on such efforts, we have raised the recycled pulp content to 72.2% in our packaging paper stock and endeavor to increase the rate even further.

As part of our efforts to promote recycling and efficient use of resources, LG Electronics utilizes recycled plastic in part of its product components following careful stability and reliability tests. Based on such efforts, LG Electronics used a total of 5,617 tons of Post-Consumer Recycled (PCR) plastic in 2013, continually increasing use to 3,298 tons and 4,980 tons in 2011 and 2012, respectively. We also establish and manage specific targets to continuously expand our use of recycled plastic over time, and plan to build a systematic management system.
