Production Research Institute

Ongoing work is being carried out at LG's various research centres around the globe to develop new basic technologies in order to create new business opportunities—keeping the company at the top of its game.

The Production Research Institute provides manufacturing process and production system innovations through the advanced development of production technology. The Institute also manufactures technological innovations, core equipment localizations, and cutting-edge production technology in order to retain a competitive advantage in popular fields such as PDPs, LCDs, mobile handsets, DTVs, and DAs.

To further enhance competencies in production technology, the Institute conducts active research and develops core manufacturing solutions, including system engineering, engineering solutions, electronics packaging, inspection and testing, manufacturing automation, photo lithography, laser applied processing, micro forming technology, appearance technology, and thin-film technology.

The Production Research Institute enhances production technology skills, providing new designs in areas such as production systems and core equipment.

Each of LG Electronics' Institutes of Technology is comprised of several laboratories, which research and develop basic technologies.

Major R&D Areas within the Production Research Institute

Micro Forming Technology

The laboratory focuses on developing display components via atmospheric pressure, plasma, and LIGA technology (research areas include thick-film coating, imprinting, nano-forming, and nano material fabrication).

Photo Lithography Technology

The laboratory is undertaking research on lithography technology to better assist FPD and circuit patterning (research areas include adaptive optics technology, precision machining/control, and material processing).

Thin Film

The laboratory is conducting research on manufacturing, processing, and system technology to further improve its thin-film forming technology and provide a clean, eco-friendly production facility (research areas include deposition technology, thermal system and particle controls, and magnet simulation).

Laser-Applied Processing

Based on laser and optics core technologies, the laboratory is researching adaptive laser processing for display and electronic components (research areas include laser direct patterning, repairing, marking, cutting, cleaning, curing, deposition, annealing, and laser exposure).

Inspection & Testing

Based on machine vision, instrumentation and control, and sensor technology, the laboratory is conducting research on various inspection/testing systems including optics/electric inspection for display panels such as PDP/LCD, high-speed inspection for electronic components, and testing/inspection for handsets and home appliances.

Electronics Packaging

The laboratory is researching the essential technology for the circuit manufacturing of electronic and telecommunication products. It directly supports core competencies in terms of providing a thinner, minimized, cost-efficient circuit while enhancing its performance. The laboratory's research areas include packaging design, circuit CAE, electromagnetic wave control, packaging process, reliability assessment, and environmentally friendly packaging material.

System Engineering

The laboratory is focusing on the research and development of a newly improved, customer/market-oriented production system to acquire and retain global competency in terms of value, cost, and speed (research area includes production system in manufacturing area).

Engineering Solution

The engineering solution laboratory predicts product performance in the early stages, to reduce product-development lead-time and costs. The laboratory's research area includes a design support-system and simulation-based design technology.

Automated Manufacturing

The laboratory is continuing to research automated manufacturing technologies for electronic, telecommunication products (research areas includes high-precision engines, accelerated control, cleaning equipment, FPD manufacturing equipment, and secondary battery-production equipment).

Appearance Technology

The laboratory is conducting research on the timely realization and production of new concept and design products (research areas includes surface treatment and decoration technology, metal/plastic/hybrid forming technology and functional/ecological material application and analysis).

Module Equipment

The laboratory is continuing to research bonding/laminating technology and related equipment for display products (research areas include TAB bonder, polarizer attaching system, precision print system, laminator, and coater)

Transfer System

Based on production layout and glass carrier technology, the laboratory is conducting research on optimized logistics systems for the assembly and production of display products (research areas includes PDP/PRP production logistics system, LCD in-line logistics system, and glass carrier system).
