Slim-bezelled design; top-notch picture quality; easy menu system; wide range of supported media from USB connection; reasonable price - 50PK590 50PK590 Review

Before 1995, when LG was known as 'GoldStar', it wasn't exactly famed for making high-end products. Its rebranding as LG has seen it produce equipment of a much higher standard, but it still frequently takes us by surprise with how good many of its products are. Continue Reading...

Rated 4 out of 5 by The best in its price range I've had this 60" plasma for about 2 years now (a bit of a pity, because if I'd known they were about to release a smarter TV for pretty much the same price a few months later, I'd have waited to buy that instead, because whilst mine does have BBC I player and a couple of other useful web sites I can look at on it, it doesn't allow me to change what sites I can see on the TV and none of the hackers has come up with a utility that can be used to change the set range of sites that can be viewed on it, whereas the newer models DO allow this). Overall, the quality of the picture set against the price for similar TV's in the same range, the LG beats the competition hands down. When I bought mine, I researched it exhaustively on the web (AVForums mainly). There were stories of ghost images left on the screen after a static image had been on the screen for a couple of minutes or so. I haven't had ANY problems with that at all - in my view, that's the opinion of nit-pickers and perfection fanatics because there CAN be a ghost image when you go from a very white bright static screen shot to an almost black static screen, which shows a ghost image for about half a second or so. During motion, it doesn't show up at all. Sound quality isn't bad, but it ain't great, so I output my sound through an amp to my own speakers which is a lot better. However, when pulling in movies from my computer across the home network (in MKV format) it should be noted that the TV WON'T play DTS formatted sound, so any with it need an AC3 format sound track which generally means they have to be re-muxed with MKV-Merge Audio Converter which can take half an hour or so for each movie, although its easy to do. I've yet to find an MKV, MP4, or AVI formatted movie that won't play with the built-in player. On top of that, when I play a movie via my external media player out-putting to the TV, and then replay the same movie via the built in movie player, the quality is a lot better via the TV's own in-built player (i.e. it's sharper and brighter). When I view some movies on my mates 50 inch Samsung plasma, the pictures looks washed out. So, all in all, I'd recommend anyone to get one of these if you're looking to buy a 60 inch TV. And I'd definitely advise you to get the 60 inch over the 50 inch as the price difference is now only about £350 if you look for them on the web. 14 December 2012
