Ice forming on top of unit, what is the problem?

Unit set on auto with hose drain. Started making unusual noise a couple of months ago.

There are two common causes of ice forming on a dehumidifier. One could be if the room temperature gets below about 65 degrees Fahrenheit. The unit should perform properly once the temperature rises. The other common possibility would be that the unit is leaking coolant, and it is freezing on the coils. Answer: 
That usually means it is no longer working. The way it works is to cool the air so the humidity will condense. If the water is not condensing the cooling system is gone. It could be the refrigerant has leaked out or some other problem.
