What People Are Saying

Rated 3.7 out of 5 by 64 reviewers.
Rated 2 out of 5 by Worst piece of electronic equipment I ever bought. This blu-ray player is awful. The only reason I gave it a 2-star overall rating is because it DOES actually play the DVD's we put in it. My main problem is that it is slow in everything that it does and half the time, it doesn't read that there is a disc in there. March 8, 2013
Rated 4 out of 5 by Integrates well with my LG TV I really like the SimpLink functionality that automatically switches the input on my TV to the Blu-Ray input when the BR unit is turned on. Only downside is that it takes some discs a while to load up. Not sure if this inherent to Blu-Ray or just this unit. Also, I've disabled network access because I don't care for BDlive functionality, and I really wouldn't miss the BDLive nag screen that pops on EVERY BR disc that tries to connect to the internet. Rated 1 out of 5 by I couldn't possibly hate this product more.... I couldn't possibly hate this product more if it called me names every time I turned it on. The only redeeming feature of this blueray player is that it's light-weight. >.) The remote feels cheap. >.) The player doesn't register input from the remote unless the remote is pointed [directly] at it. >.) The virtual keyboard is cumbersome to navigate, and very slow and erratic in responding. >.) The player only reads discs about half the time, and asks me to choose between DVD and USB sources, even if there's no USB connected. >.) Reading discs takes a very, very long time. Sometimes up to a minute. >.) The OS on the player wouldn't acquire a dynamic IP from the router, and static IP settings would revert to all "0's" after saving/applying them. >.) The Wireless USB dongle worked just fine on my laptop; windows 7 recognized it right away and downloaded drivers without any hassle. So the network settings problem definitely resides with the player itself. >.) Speaking of the Wireless USB adapter, despite it's good functionality, it measures about 2.5 inches long, and looks really stupid sticking out from the front of the player. I wouldn't recommend this product to someone a hate. August 25, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by Product is Great I love the quality and the features .easy to set up June 29, 2012
Rated 3 out of 5 by Good player with the exception of wireless The player was easy to connect the television and looks great playing blu ray disks. I have had the player six months have not been able to sucessfully connect to my wireless network for longer than five to ten minutes and when I do connect it does not access netflix or vudu. Only utube and then plays very few of those videos without timing out. As another reviewed said the wireless dongle sticks out of the front and is easily knocked out. The only bonus is I got the player on sale June 16, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by Excellent!!!!! This Blu Ray Player is the first I have purchased from LG and I have to say that I am completely impressed from picture quality to affordability! Life is Good! May 30, 2012
Rated 3 out of 5 by Nice but wireless problems I did the last update and wireless is no long an option in the menu I think they need more quality control. Locks up on apps like pandora but has been good with netflix other than this it has been a good blu-ray May 16, 2012
Rated 4 out of 5 by Easy to hook up. Everything is very good with this player, however I would like to have more apps available (such as pandora and radio/bee). May 3, 2012

the LG BD640 - wi-fi?

best buy says the wi-fi is built-in, but I read another review that said it required a wi-fi adapter and the adapter is included. Is the wi-fi built in with the BD640? Thanks

Answer:
It does have a dongle sticking out the front that the kids can grab and lose, which almost happened already. Loses connection w/the router less than 15 feet away and can be a pain to restart the deal to get connection.

Answer:
It is interesting that the response from LG is wrong. Wi-Fi is NOT built in, it is PLUG in. I own this player and have the dongle stiking out the front to prove it.

Answer:
The BD640 From LG Electronics has a wireless adaptor "stick" that comes in the box. It plugs into the front of the player, usb connector on far right of face, for access to your existing wireless network. I looked it up by reading the owners manual on LG's website.

GOT IT!!!! Go to your settings, then to update - then connect to the web and run an update.
This seems to work - but if it doesn't , call the 800 number and they can actually update the machine through the internet for you!

Answer:
I am having the same problem with DISNEY CARS 2. Other PIXAR DVDs work fine, but this one freezes the player and you need to unplug it to reset it.
The manual suggested changing the "area code" to the country that the disc was manufactured in - and that was Canada, so we tried that, but to no avail.
The player would not even recognize that there was a disc in it.
It accepted TOY STORY, and OUTLAW JOSIE WALES, but not DISNEY CARS 2.

Answer:
I am having the same problem. The DVD tries to load, then the screen freezes and all controls are frozen. The only way to gain control is to unplug it and plug it back in. I thought it was just me, but I see that isn't true. I also updated to the most recent software, to no avail.

..in addition to hotaustin's helpful stuff, note that it took me a
couple-of tries to get the Netflix-connect to take..

..you need their non-ESN password, but it may take another day
or so for the connect to happen..
..it also seems like going thru the Netcast section (rather than the
Setup section, which i tried several times) is the proper way to
connect to Netflix..

..thx hotaustin..yer points helped here, fer sure..

but naturally, they make things hard>>

Answer:
Hey there, I had the same problem. And the ESN is actually not the code that Netflix wants you to enter when activating on their site. The code is given to you in a different area of the LG menu. Go to "Home" on the LG remote first, scroll over to the "Netcast" icon, hit enter. Netflix will be an option on that screen, select it. It will ask you if you are a Netflix member, select "yes" and it will spit you back out a code. The code is much shorter than the ESN you referenced in your question and it is only alpha characters (or at least mine was).

The instructions for setting up Netflix in the large LG manual for this 640 are not as good as the smaller insert called the Quick Start Guide. Good luck!

BD640 will not power up at all

The unit will not power up, no display. However, the USB plug in provided with the unit does light up when it is inserted into the USB port. This is a brand new unit. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

Summit blu ray's won't play

I now have three different Summit Entertainment blu ray movies that will not load in my player. All were bought brand new and play fine in my computer's blu ray player, so the discs are working... just not in my LG player. Clearly there must be something conflicting between these movies and my player and I need to find a way to resolve it.
