LG Electronics' PDP Investments and Development Achievements

LG Electronics has successfully developed a plasma display panel (PDP) that boasts the world's highest brightness of 1500 cd/m2 (1.5-2 times the industry's average) and a contrast ratio of 5000:1, thus demonstrating its technological superiority in the PDP industry.

LG Electronics has successfully developed a plasma display panel (PDP) that boasts the world's highest brightness of 1500 cd/m2 (1.5-2 times the industry's average) and a contrast ratio of 5000:1, thus demonstrating its technological superiority in the PDP industry.

To develop the world's highest brightness and contrast ratio for PDPs, LG Electronics formed a 20-member research team, including five doctoral holders, backed by a 3.5 billion won investment. The LG-developed technologies that resulted from the year-long project include:

  • Peak enhanced technology (PET) needed to implement high brightness.
  • Technology enabling a high contrast ratio by implementing "real black."
  • New ASIC technology.
  • A picture quality-improving algorithm.

In March 2004, LG Electronics unveiled a 42-inch PDP incorporating the industry-leading technology of 1500 cd/m2 brightness and 5000:1 contrast ratio at CeBit 2004, the world's largest multimedia electronics and information show held in Hanover, Germany, receiving acclaim from buyers and visitors.

In 2003, LG Electronics became the world's first company to develop the K/K PDP module with brightness of 1000 cd/M2 and a contrast ratio of 1000:1, and is currently applying a contrast ratio of 3000:1 to all of its PDP models. LG Electronics is now commercializing its latest improvements in brightness and contrast ratio, and will apply it to all of its PDP models by the end of 2004.

Kim Han-soo, Vice President of LG Electronics' PDP division said, "LG Electronics will gain a 30% share in the global PDP market by 2005, thus consolidating the world's top spot, by introducing advanced PDP design and process technologies, and having the world's largest PDP production capacity."

In'98, LG Electronics surpassed the front-running Japanese PDP makers by developing the world's first 60-inch PDP. In 2003, the company developed the world's largest 71-inch and 76-inch PDPs through continuous R&D investments. This latest development, introducing a PDP with the world's highest brightness and contrast ratio that enables brilliant picture quality, again demonstrates LG Electronics' technological superiority in the PDP area.
