Turntable Noises - Microwave Oven

Troubleshooting Cooking Appliances Last Updated 08/22/2015

Select the type of noise from the tabs below that is being heard during the microwave's operation:

  1. If the turntable is making a rattling noise while it turns, check that the glass tray, rotating ring, shaft, and rack are all installed securely. If any of these items are slightly out of place, it could cause a rattling sound while the microwave runs.

  2. Remove the turntable glass and roller support and thoroughly clean the cavity, both sides of the turntable glass, and the roller support. Pay close attention to the rollers for debris. Dry all components and retest by heating a glass of water inside.

    To install the glass tray:

    • Place the guide tray on the oven cavity bottom. The rollers on the shaft should fit inside the guide tray bottom groove.

    • Place the rotating ring on the guide tray.

    • Place the glass tray on the rotating ring. Fit the rollers of the shaft between the raised, hollowed groove on the glass tray bottom. The rollers on the rotating ring should fit inside the glass tray bottom ridge.

  2. Remove the turntable glass and roller support and thoroughly clean the cavity, both sides of the turntable glass, and the roller support. Pay close attention to the rollers for debris. Dry all components and retest with by heating a glass of water inside.

  2. If the microwave's oven cavity has been cleaned recently, the clicking sound may be related to another issue. If the sound occurs at regular intervals while the microwave cooks, then likely it is a result of the magnetron engaging and disengaging.
  1. If the microwave has just been installed, make sure that the tape over the shaft at the bottom has been removed or squeaking sounds will occur.

  2. Noise can also occur if a lot of food is being placed on the glass tray, preventing the glass tray from moving smoothly because of the weight. To ensure proper operation, do not place too much food on the turntable at once.
