Hangouts is an alternative to the built in messaging app included in Android KitKat. With Hangouts, you can send and receive messages and make video calls with one person or with a group of people.


You can change the default messaging app to fit your needs.

  1. From the Home screen, tap the Apps  > Settings  > Networks tab  > Tethering & networks

  2. Tap Default SMS app, then select a default messaging app from the list. When selecting other than Messaging app a prompt will display, tap Yes to confirm.

To start a Hangout:

  1. From the Home screen, tap Apps  > Hangouts

  2. Tap the Add icon  at the top right of your Hangouts list.

  3. Select a contact for your Hangout by typing the person's name, email address, or phone number in the search box. You can also select one of your contacts from the lists below the search box.

  4. Type your message and touch the Send icon  . You also can make a video call to that person by touching the video call icon

Add location:

You can share where places are located or where your location is with any of your conversations.

  1. Open an existing or a new Hangout.

  2. Tap the Location icon  next to the camera icon.

  3. Move the map to choose a location, or touch the My location icon  in the upper righthand corner of the map to find your current location.

  4. Tap the Share icon  or the red pin  to add the location to your Hangouts conversation.

  5. You can add a message to the location and send it in the conversation.

To start a group Hangout:

  1. Tap the Add icon

  2. Select a contact for your Hangout by typing the person's name, email address, or phone number in the search box. You can also select one of your contacts from the lists below the search box.

  3. Tap Anyone else? in the contact box at the top of the Hangout.

  4. Select one or more people to add to the Hangout.

  5. Tap OK.

  6. Type the message you'd like to send, and tap the Send icon
