Learn how to use Messaging and Hangouts apps and how to change your default messaging app.


The Messaging app combines text and multimedia messaging into one intuitive, easy-to-use menu.

Sending a message

  1. From the Home screen, tap the Apps  > Messaging

  2. Tap  to create a new message.

  3. Enter a contact name or phone in the To field. As you enter the contact name, matching contacts appear. You can tap a suggest recipient. You can also add multiple contacts.

Note: You will be charged for a text message for every person you send the message to.

  1. Tap the text field and start entering your message.

  2. Tap the Menu icon  to open the options menu. Choose from any of the available options.

  3. Tap Send to send your message.

Warning: The 160-character limit may vary from country to country and carrier to carrier depending on how the text message is coded and the language used in the message.

If an image, video, or audio file is added to a text message, it will be automatically converted into a multimedia message (MMS) and you will be charged accordingly.

Note: When you get a text message during a call, there will be an audible notification.

Using Smiles

Liven up your messages using smileys and emojis. When writing a new message, tap the Menu icon ICON > Insert smiley. To access emojis, tap  on the LG Keyboard and choose an emoji category to view the available emojis.

Changing the Conversation Theme

Customize how your conversations are displayed.

  1. From the Home screen, tap Apps  > Messaging  > Menu icon  > Settings > Conversation theme.

  2. Tap the Wallpaper tab to choose the conversation background. Choose from the 6 options provided, a photo from your Gallery, or take a pictures to use.

  3. Tap the Bubble tab to choose the conversation style. Choose from the 6 options provided.

Changing Your Message Settings

Your phones message settings are predefined, so you can send messages immediately. You can change the settings based on your preferences.

  1. From the Home screen, tap Apps  > Messaging  > Menu icon  > Settings.

You can change the default messaging app so that your SMS/MMS messages are routed through a compatible app of your choice. For example, switch the default app from the Messaging App to Hangouts.

  1. From the Home screen, tap Apps  > Settings  > Default message app

  2. Select a default messaging app from the list. A prompt will display when selecting an app other than Messaging. Tap Yes to confirm.

With Hangouts on Android devices, you can send messages and make video calls on multiple devices to multiple people. You can also share photos and your location with others.

To start a Hangout

  1. From the Home screen, tap Apps  > Google folder  > Hangouts

  2. Tap the Add icon  at the top right of your Hangouts list.

  3. Select a contact for your Hangout by typing the person's name, email address, or phone number in the search box. You can also select one of your contacts from the lists below the search box.

  4. Type your message and touch the Send icon

  5. Tap ICON on the message bar to Take photo  or Attach photo  , and tap  to share your Location.

  6. Tap the Video icon  to video chat with a contact.

Add locations:

You can share where places are located or where your location is with any of your conversations.

  1. Open an existing or a new Hangout.

  2. Tap the Location icon  on the message bar.

  3. Move the map to choose a location, or touch the My location icon  in the upper right-hand corner of the map to find your current location.

  4. Tap the Send icon  or the red pin  to add the location to your Hangouts conversation.

  5. You can add a message to the location and send it in the conversation.

To start a group Hangout:

  1. Tap the Add icon

  2. Select a contact for your Hangout by typing the person's name, email address, or phone number in the search box. You can also select one of your contacts from the lists below the search box.

  3. Tap Anyone else? in the contact box at the top of the Hangout.

  4. Select one or more people to add to the Hangout.

  5. Tap OK.

  6. Type the message you'd like to send, and tap the Send icon
