Need help with your Disc Drive after upgrading to Windows 10?

You've come to the right place.

Try This!

If you can't find your drive in the Device Manager, several users have solved the issue by doing the following:

  1. Open Device Manager (right-click the windows icon, choose Device Manager).
  2. Expand IDE ATA/ATAPI.
  3. Uninstall both ATA Channels 0 and 1 (there may be multiples of each, uninstall them all).

Note: If IDE ATA/ATAPI does not have ATA Channels, uninstall the Controller. This should be the only item in this area if there are no channels.

  4. Reboot immediately (you should be prompted to restart after removing the last one).

Take a look at this Microsoft Community Page Windows 10 DVD Drive missing for a long list of success stories using these steps.

Try This!

Insert a music CD into the drive. Does it play?

Yes - This means the drive is working. You will need DVD/Blu-ray playback/burning software to resolve your issue.

Note: Windows 10 Does Not include DVD/Blu-ray playback software by default, so you need the Cyberlink software (the disc that came with your drive) or something comparable.

No - This could be related to Windows, or possibly a hardware issue. Try the steps listed in this Microsoft Support article first: Your CD or DVD drive is not recognized by Windows or other programs.

Still not working after trying the steps above?

Let's start at the beginning.

    1. Try to unplug the USB cable for 10 seconds, then plug it back in. If using a single wire, make sure it is the one shown here.

    2. Open the File Explorer.

    3. Click This PC from the side menu.

    4. Your drive will be shown under devices and drives. Blu-ray drives will generally say BD-RE Drive.

Note: If you don't see your drive in the File Explorer, leave the file explorer open, disconnect the drive, and whichever drive disappears is the right one. Plug it back in and continue below.

Is your drive shown in the File Explorer?

    Yes No
  1. Great! The computer recognized your drive.

Leave the File Explorer open, and insert a disc.

Wait a few seconds while the drive reads the disc.

Does the name of the disc show in the File Explorer (similar to the image above)?

    Yes No
  2. If you've tried everything above (including the "Try This" areas near the top), your disc drive may require service.

  3. More great news! The drive is operating properly, and communicating with the computer.

At this point, the only thing that could be standing in our way is Playback Software.

Let's check if your Cyberlink Media Suite software is installed.

    1. Go to Start .
    2. All Apps .
    3. These should be listed alphabetically. Look under C, and click Cyberlink if it's there.

Do you see Cyberlink Media Suite?

    Yes No
  4. This means the disc drive is not able to read the disc.

    • Make sure the drive is closed completely (you should hear the disc spin when you first close it).
    • Try other discs to see if their names appear in the File Explorer.

If the drive will not read any discs, it may require service.

For your convenience, you can Request a Repair online using the button below.

  5. Great! Part of the Cyberlink Media Suite is PowerDVD 10.

Open that program and watch your movie!

  6. If you have the original disc that came with the drive, insert it and follow the instructions to install the software.
