Monitor Guided Help Page - Monitor

LG computer monitors offer slim designs, striking color, and life-like motion for optimal viewing experiences. Discover a whole new way to view graphs and movies with LG monitors.

Stand Installation

Stand installation may vary by model, so be sure to check your user's manual for specific information. In general the steps are as follows:

  1. Connect the stand body to the monitor.
  2. Connect the stand base to the stand body.
  3. Secure the stand base and stand body using the set screw shown in the image.

Below are some general precautions you should take into account.

  • The monitor should be free of obstruction by at least 4 inches in each direction for proper ventilation.
  • Plug in video cables before the power cable.
  • Be careful when handling the monitor not to apply pressure to the screen, lift with an open palm from the bottom of the unit.
  • Most monitors are VESA® compliant and can be wall-mounted.

Types of Connections

HDMI

Transmits digital video and audio signals from your PC to the monitor. Connect your PC to the monitor using the HDMI cable as shown in the illustration.

  1. Connecting your PC to the monitor using the HDMI cable may cause device compatibility issues.
  2. Recommended HDMI cable types
    - High-Speed HDMI®/TM Cable
    - High-Speed HDMI®/TM Cable with Ethernet
  3. Using a DVI to HDMI / DP (DisplayPort) cable may cause compatibility issues.

D-SUB (VGA)

Transmits the analog video signal from your PC to the monitor. Connect the monitor to the PC using the provided 15-pin D-Sub signal cable as illustrated.

Note: This may also be called RGB, VGA, or Monitor Cable.

  1. Connect the D-SUB cable and turn the screws in the direction of the arrow. To prevent disconnection secure the cable firmly, do not over tighten.
  2. If you are using an Apple® computer, an Apple® adapter is required. The adapter can be purchased at an Apple® store

DisplayPort/Mini-DisplayPort

Transmits digital video and audio signals from your PC to the monitor. Connect the monitor to your PC using the display port cable as shown in the illustration.

  1. There may be no video or audio output depending on the DP (DisplayPort) version of the PC.
  2. When using a Mini DP to DP (Mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort) cable, a cable with DisplayPort 1.1a specifications or above is recommended.

DVI

Transmits digital video signals to the monitor. Connect the monitor using the DVI cable as illustrated.

  1. If you connect a DVI signal cable, use the correct DVI-D or DVI-E depending on the input (it will be labelled accordingly).
  2. Using a DVI to HDMI cable may cause compatibility issues.
  3. To prevent disconnection, secure the cable firmly and do not over-tighten.

Thunderbolt

You can connect your high-resolution display or high-performance data device to the monitor via a Thunderbolt port. Connect your external device to the monitor using the Thunderbolt cable as illustrated.

  1. The maximum data transmission rate of each port is 20 Gb/s.
  2. Make sure to use a Thunderbolt certified cable to avoid device malfunction.
  3. The ability to set up dual monitors using Thunderbolt and daisy-chaining technology depends on the performance of your video card.

USB

The USB port on the product functions as a USB hub.

  1. To use USB 3.0, connect the A-B type USB 3.0 cable of the product to the PC.
  2. Peripheral devices connected to the USB 1, 2 port can be controlled from the PC.
  3. Make sure to install the most recent Windows OS service pack before using the product.
  4. Peripheral devices are sold separately.
  5. A keyboard, mouse, or USB device can be connected to the USB port.
  6. A USB device with an automatic recognition program installed or that uses its own driver may not be recognized.
  7. Some USB devices may not be supported or may not work properly.

Headphones

Use the headphone port to connect a peripheral device to the monitor. Connect as illustrated.

  1. Depending on the audio settings of the PC and external device, headphone and speaker functions may be limited.
  2. It is difficult to connect an angle plug earphone or a peripheral device, so please use a straight type plug.

Connecting Devices

Most of our monitors are Plug-and-Play compliant, meaning that when you plug the monitor in to your computer, it will automatically work without additional setup. This is the case if you have only one monitor plugged in to your computer.

If you have multiple devices plugged in to your monitor, use the Input button to switch between them. The Input button is located on the button bezel, most often found on the bottom of the monitor, either in the center or on the right side.

If you have multiple monitors, you may need to configure your Operating System (on your computer) to correctly display on the additional monitor.

Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8, 8.1

General Steps (should work with all Windows versions XP and newer):

  1. Right-click an open area on your desktop.
  2. Choose Screen Resolution from the menu that appears.
  3. The Screen Resolution menu provides several options to adjust connected monitors.
  4. Click Identify (pointed at by the top-right arrow) to display large numbers on each connected monitor corresponding to the numbers you see in this menu.
  5. In the Multiple Displays section, you have a few options.
    • Mirror/Duplicate Display will show the same screen on both monitors. This is a good option if presenting to others because you can control the computer screen while they view your actions on a different, possibly larger screen.
    • Extend Display will make the second monitor an extension of the first, meaning you will be able to view different items on each display. Simply drag a window from one screen to the next.
    • You may have options to show the desktop only on certain screens. If you use this option, whichever screen you choose will be the only one that receives a signal. This means the other monitor will either sleep, or display a no signal message. Choose one of the other options for the best experience.
  6. Click on the image corresponding to your monitor to make changes.
  7. If you have no image or a distorted image on your monitor, adjusting the resolution to the optimal setting should fix it.

User Settings

Available settings, and buttons for accessing menus, will differ by model. Consult your user guide for specific instructions. A user guide should have come with your monitor, but you can also download it from the product support page.

  • Enter your model number into the lg.com search box at the top of the page.
  • Choose your monitor from the dropdown list that appears.
  • Choose Product Support.
  • Go to the Manuals & Documents section, then click the link under Owner's Manual for your preferred language.

Dual Linkup

The Dual Linkup feature allows two compatible portable devices--such as a computer, camera, phone, or Blu-ray player--to be connected to the monitor, and both can be viewed on the same screen simultaneously.

Note: To use Dual Linkup, one device must be connected to the DisplayPort while the other is connected to either the HDMI or DVI port.

Screen Splitter Information

Multitasking doesn't have to mean shuffling back and forth between windows. With a single click, the 4-Screen Split feature divides the screen into as many as four customizable segments, two-by-two. Now you can see four different windows at the same time.

Note: Screen Split software runs on Windows Vista/7/8 and Mac OS.

Setting Up and Using Screen Splitter

If you haven't already, please download the Screen Splitter Software found in the Screen Splitter (info) section.

Once the software is downloaded, find and extract the zip file.
Double-click the extracted file and choose Run.
Read and Accept the License Agreement, then click Next.
This step may take some time, please be patient.
Restart your computer to complete the installation!
Screen Splitter will run automatically when the computer restarts. Click the Show hidden icons arrow.
Right-click the Screen Split icon as shown.
From here you can choose how you want to arrange your screens.

Screen Splitter Features

Monitor Selection

User can select the active monitor by clicking on “Monitor Selection” menu and then by selecting either the “Primary monitor” or “Secondary monitor” option. “Primary monitor” or “Secondary monitor” option will be disabled if either “Primary monitor” or “Secondary monitor” is un-supported monitor. All the Screen Split features like Layout, Layout Initialization etc will work for the active [selected] monitor.

Note: Monitor Selection Menu will not be available if only one monitor is connected with the system.

Off

Off Submenu indicates the status of Screen Split program i.e. is Screen Split on or off. If the submenu shows 'Off' ticked then it indicates that no layout has been selected.

2 Screen (16:5)

The screen will be split into 2 parts with a ratio of 16:5 -> left : right. As illustrated.

2 Screen (Balanced)

The screen will be split equally in half (side by side).

3 Screen (Left)

The screen will be divided into 3 parts with the left portion occupying 50% of the screen, and the remaining 50% on the right side of the screen gets split into 2 equal portions (top and bottom). Dividing the screen into 3 parts.

3 Screen (Right)

The screen will be divided into 3 parts with the right portion occupying 50% of the screen, and the remaining 50% on the left side of the screen gets split into 2 equal portions (top and bottom). Dividing the screen into 3 parts.

3 Screen (Top)

The screen will be divided into 3 parts with the top portion occupying 50% of the screen, and the remaining 50% on the bottom of the screen gets split into 2 equal portions (side by side). Dividing the screen into 3 parts.

3 Screen (Bottom)

The screen will be divided into 3 parts with the bottom portion occupying 50% of the screen, and the remaining 50% on the top of the screen gets split into 2 equal portions (side by side). Dividing the screen into 3 parts.

3 Screen (Balanced)

Divides the screen vertically into 3 equal portions.

4 Screen (Balanced)

Divides the screen into 4 equal parts (2x2).

Adjust Resolution

Screen appearance can be enhanced by choosing the appropriate resolution.
This area also contains the Font Size and Option menus.
  • Option will display a sub-menu.
  • Layout Initialization resets the layout to the default.
  • Auto Start allows Screen Splitter to start when the computer does.
  • Exit closes the application (screen will no longer be split).
  1. Is the unit securely plugged-in to an electrical outlet?
    (If plugged into a power strip, please plug the unit directly into a wall outlet) Yes No
  2. Plug the unit securely into an electrical outlet.

  3. Does the LED on the front of the unit light up? Yes No
    • Try to plug the unit into a different, known working, electrical outlet. Test the outlet using another device, such as a lamp.
    • There may be a Physical Power Switch on the unit, make sure it is switched on.
    • If the issue persists, Contact Us.
  4. When you press the Power button, does the LED Power Indicator change? (Either change color or turn on/off) Yes No What Is This?

  5. The LED will illuminate White when in On Mode, Flashing White when in Sleep Mode, or Off when the unit is in Off Mode.

    • If applicable, check the batteries on the remote, then press the Power button.
    • Check the Power button on the unit.
    • If the issue persists, Contact Us.
  6. Congratulations, your unit has power!
    Try the Video Issues troubleshooting section for additional assistance.

  1. Is the image abnormal or not displayed at all? Abnormal No Image
  2. Is the LED Power Indicator illuminated? Yes No
  3. Is the display shaky, unstable, or do images leave shadow trails? Yes No
  4. Does the screen retain an image even when turned off? Yes No
    • Make sure you have the resolution set properly.
    • If the selected resolution is HDMI 1080i 60/50 Hz (interlaced), the screen may be flickering. Change the resolution to 1080P or the recommended resolution.
    • If the issue persists, Contact Us.
    • Try to press the power button.
    • There may be a Physical Power Switch on the unit, make sure it is switched on.
    • If the LED does not illuminate, refer to Power Issues.
  5. Are there any messages displayed on the monitor? Yes No
  6. Is the display's color abnormal? Yes No
    • Displaying a still image for a prolonged time may cause damage to the screen, resulting in the retention of the image.
    • To extend the lifetime of the monitor, use a screensaver.
  7. Is the LED Power Indicator flashing? Yes No
  8. Which message do you see? No Signal Out of Range
  9. Contact Us for further assistance.

    • Make sure your screen resolution is set properly and that your color is set to 24 bit (true color). On Windows PCs, right-click an open area on the desktop, then choose Screen resolution (you may need to enter advanced settings to change the color property).
    • Make sure the video cable is securely connected. Unplug the video cable, then plug it firmly back in to be sure.
    • Make sure the graphics card is securely inserted into the PC. If you have experience installing internal PC components, remove the video card and reseat it.
    • Update your graphics card drivers.
    • Try using a different video cable.
    • If the issue persists, Contact Us.
    • This occurs when signals transferred from the PC (graphics card) are out of the horizontal or vertical frequency range of the monitor.
    • Check your product manual for the specific frequencies.

      Note: The vertical frequency range is what more people are familair with. For products manufactured for use in the US, the vertical frequency is usually 60Hz.

    • There is no signal to the monitor.
    • Make sure the computer is turned on.
    • If using multiple displays (such as a laptop screen), make sure the computer has multiple displays enabled.
    • Make sure the cables are securely connected, both on the monitor and on the PC.
    • Try a different cable.
    • Try to hook the monitor to a different computer, or try to hook a different monitor to this computer.
    • Make sure the input you're using is enabled (Menu > Input).
    • If the issue persists, Contact Us.
    • Move the mouse or press a button on the PC to exit Sleep Mode.
    • Some PCs may require you to press the Power button on the tower or laptop to exit Sleep Mode.
    • Some PCs may take longer to exit Sleep Mode than others. If the PC has not come out of Sleep Mode after five minutes, try to Power Cycle the PC and the Monitor (unplug them, then plug them back in).

      Note: Don't forget to turn the PC back on after plugging it back in. For laptops, you may need to remove the battery.

    • If the issue persists, Contact Us.
    • If using multiple displays in extended desktop mode, the background color may be set to solid black. Try to move your mouse off of each side of the screen. If the mouse leaves the sceen (no longer visible on the main display), but is not shown on the monitor, there may be a monitor issue.
    • Check if the graphics card's resolution or frequency is within the range allowed by the monitor and set it to the recommended (optimal) resolution. On Windows PCs, right-click an empty area on the desktop and choose Screen resolution.
    • Not setting the graphics card to the recommended (optimal) resolution may result in blurred text, a dimmed screen, a truncated display area, misalignment of the display, or no display at all.
    • The setting methods may be different depending on the computer or operating system, and some resolutions may not be available depending on the performance of the graphics card. If this is the case, contact the manufacturer of the computer or graphics card for assistance.
    • Some graphics cards may not support 4096 x 2160 / 3840 x 2160 resolution. If the resolution cannot be displayed, contact the manufacturer of your graphics card.
    • If the issue persists, Contact Us.

Note: Most monitors do not include speakers. Please check the specifications of your model to make sure it has speakers before troubleshooting.

  1. Is the sound distorted or not playing at all? Distorted No Audio
  2. Are you using headphones or built-in monitor speakers? Headphones Speakers
  3. Try another set of speakers/headphones plugged directly into the PC. Is the sound distorted through those as well? Yes No
  4. Try another set of speakers/headphones, plugged directly into the PC. Do you hear audio? Yes No
  5. Try the headphones in a different device. Do you hear audio from the other device? Yes No
    • Check your user's manual. Most monitors do not have built-in speakers, so make sure your monitor does.
    • Make sure you're using a connection that supports audio, such as HDMI, DisplayPort, or Thunderbolt.
    • Make sure your monitor is set as the default audio device for your PC.

      Note: For Windows PCs, right-click the speaker icon in the notifications area (near where the time is displayed), then click Playback Devices.

    • Try to turn the volume up, both on the computer and on the monitor.
    • If the issue persists, Contact Us.
  6. Try plugging the confirmed-working headphones/speakers into the monitor. Is the sound distorted? Yes No
    • If multiple files are distorted, Check the audio settings/sound card on your PC.
    • If a single/few files are distorted, the media you are listening to may be the source of the distortion.
    • Make sure your computer is not set to mute.
    • Turn up the computer's volume.
    • The issue is with your computer, contact the product manufacturer.
    • Try to use a different HDMI/DP/Thunderbolt cable from your computer to your monitor, the cable may need to be replaced.
    • Try to hook the monitor to a different computer, the computer's sound card or drivers may need to be replaced.
    • If the issue persists, Contact Us.
  7. Your headphones/speakers need to be replaced. If your PC has a Bluetooth™ module, visit Bluetooth and Mobile Accessories..

  • From the main menu, select Option > Layout Initialization.
  • On exit, the application retains the last selected layout type and boundary information.
    • Horizontal and vertical size-fixed windows.
    • Horizontal and vertical size-ratio-fixed windows.
    • Some players: Strom player etc.
  • The application's menu will be disabled and the model name will be displayed as 'unknown' in the below scenarios:
    • Non-LG monitor or no monitor connected to the PC.
    • DDC/CI communication failure between monitor and PC (Setting monitor as Primary recommended).
    • Graphics drivers out of date.
  • No, 'Direct X' and 'Direct 3d' applications are not supported by the Screen Split application. If you are playing games when the 'Screen Split' application is running, the behavior of the game's window will be unpredictable.

If your monitor is powered on, but displays a message that says No Signal or a similar message, you'll need to configure your computer to display on the additional monitor.

Cleaning/Caring for your Product

Clean your monitor regularly to keep it at peak performance and to extend the product’s lifespan.

Caution:
- Before cleaning, turn the power off and disconnect the power cord and all other cables.
- When the monitor is left unattended or unused for a long time, disconnect the power cord from the wall outlet to prevent possible damage from lightning or power surges.

Screen, frame, cabinet, and stand

To remove dust or light dirt, wipe the surface with a dry, clean, and soft cloth.
To remove major dirt, wipe the surface with a soft cloth dampened in clean water or a diluted mild detergent. Then wipe immediately with a dry cloth.

Caution:
- Do not push, rub, or hit the surface with your fingernail or a sharp object, as this may result in scratches on the screen and image distortions.
- Do not use any chemicals, such as waxes, benzene, alcohol, thinners, insecticides, air fresheners, or lubricants, as these may damage the screen’s finish and cause discoloration.
- Do not spray liquid onto the surface. If water enters the TV, it may result in fire, electric shock, or malfunction.

Power cord

Remove the accumulated dust or dirt on the power cord regularly with a damp cloth while the cord is unplugged from the monitor and the wall.

Obtaining/Installing Drivers

Monitor drivers shouldn't be necessary, as all of our LG monitors are Plug-and-Play compliant. It is more likely that if your issue is driver related, the driver for your computer's video card will resolve it (these can be found at the computer or video card manufacturer's website). If you feel a monitor driver will help, visit the product support page for your model to check for available software. Otherwise, refer to the Troubleshooting section.

To find the product support page:

  • Enter your model number into the lg.com search box at the top of the page.
  • Choose your monitor from the dropdown list that appears.
  • Choose Product Support.
  • If it exists for your model, go to the Software Update section, then click the software link.
