BTB - BETTER THAN A BRAVIA!!!!!
Date:December 3, 2011
Best Features: Pretty much a perfect product at a very reasonable price.
"I had a choice between this 37" LG and a 40" Sony Bravia for a TV for my bedroom. The Bravia, due to its size, was slightly more expensive, but not by much. One of the main things to consider was the fact that the strip of wall I was planning to mount the TV on was only 43" wide. This LG is about 36" and the Bravia was 39.5" wide (across the bottom) so after a long process of comparison shopping I went with this TV as I felt it was a better bang for my buck and an easier fit for the pace in my room.
The reason I titled this review "Better Than A Bravia" is because my pros and cons list clearly had the Bravia beat on a lot of levels. When looking at the two models next to each other in the store, I noticed some great things about both, but the LG was the clear winner.
First, Sony does not currently offer a 37" TV, which was what made me consider the LG in the first place. I've never owned an LG product before, and I have had great experiences with a lot of Sony products in the past, but I felt like a 40" TV would be too much TV for my bedroom. At the same time, because this TV was to sit all the way across the room from my bed, I felt that the 32" Bravia would be too small for my needs, so I needed something that most people would consider to be a "big" TV without getting something huge. While both the 37" LG and 40" Sony Bravia fit my wall space, the LG was slightly less expensive and offered me everything I wanted while not seeming like "too much" TV for my room. Contrarily, should I want to put this TV in a living room in the future, it's also big enough for that as well.
Second, LG's HD televisions have a higher customer satisfaction rate than Sony's - believe it or not. Check the internet and see for yourself. This is another reason why I was willing to break my brand loyalty and go with the LG. While I would have felt secure in purchasing another product with a Sony name, LG's reputation for customer satisfaction made me feel like I was not taking a risk by purchasing one of their products.
Third - the most important factor - the quality of the picture on this television is second to none. While in the store, I noticed that Bravia (on most occasions) seemed to do better with blacks and shadows but almost always looked pale in comparison to the LG when it came to whites and colors. I am a big fan of movies and watching professional hockey, so the fact that the LG was able to more vibrant colors was important to me. Also, while the Bravia was great for capturing sharp images when there was not much movement, the LG seemed to keep up better and produce sharper images with a lot of moment on the screen. Furthermore, the LG has several different sound and picture modes that fit a watcher's needs according to what they are viewing. In the end, the Sony Bravia couldn't hold a candle to this TV's 100,000:1 contrast ratio. [Bravia's LCD TV's have a maximum contrast ratio of 25,000:1.]
All in all, I entered this process leaning towards the security of buying a product with the Sony name, but once I sat down and did some comparison shopping I couldn't turn my back on what this TV had to offer. Even standard channels on this television seem like they are in HD! There were some reviews I read that complained about the sound capabilities of the television but so far I have had nothing but great experiences watching movies/sports etc. I feel the sound quality is fine for my needs. Dialogue, music and sound effects all come through very clearly on the two 10w speakers, so in the end this TV's sound capabilities were nothing to worry about.
I am very happy with this purchase so far and, as of the moment, would definitely purchase another top-of-the-line technological product from LG in the future. If you are looking for a great 37" HDTV, look no further!!!"
