Answer:
Hi,
Thank you for your interest in the 47" 1080p 60Hz LED HDTV, Model # 47LN5200. All LG TVs support Closed Captions. In fact, every TV manufacturer is required to by law!
In 1993, the FCC required all analog television receivers with screens 13 inches or larger sold or manufactured in the United States to contain built-in decoder circuitry to display closed captioning. As of July 1, 2002, the FCC also required that digital television (DTV) receivers include closed captioning display capability.
As recently as on February 20, 2014, the FCC set new, improved rules for TV closed captioning to ensure that viewers who are deaf and hard of hearing have full access to programming, resolving concerns on captioning quality and providing much-needed guidance to video programming distributors and programmers. There is a guide on the FCC site that will be updated when final dates new rules go into effect are announced...IFV

Answer:
While it depends upon what functions you desire to use, if basic cable is all that is being used, then there is no reason to think that this TV will see the signal any differently than your previous unit.

If so, is this an easily performed change that can be done numerous times easily (as an on screen menu item would be)?

The internal speakers do remain on but there is a menu option so you can keep them on or off while using external speakers if there is a delay or other issues.

Answer:
No. We were concerned about the same thing, but hooked it up anyway, and discovered that we have full use of the TV speakers as well as our stereo speakers. They also act independently of the stereo speakers.

Answer:
We appreciate your interest in this television. When the OPTICAL Digital Audio Output connection is connected, then the INTERNAL SPEAKERS need to be deactivated in the SOUND menu for proper operation. This is not an automatic adjustment. The speakers and audio system are not designed to operate simultaneously.

Is it a lower resolution TV that upscales to 1080p?

Answer:
That question doesn't make any sense. This is a 1080p display. If you feed it lower resolution video (e.g., a 480p SD DVD), it'll /UPCONVERT/ it to 1080p. But the TV itself has a native resolution of 1080p.

Answer:
NO, the source like a cable box or ps4 and sat box is what handles the scale but it is native 1080p. It is a great value at the price.
