Johannesburg, South Africa, 18 March -- On 28 March 2009, millions of people around the world will observe the World Wildlife Fund’s Earth Hour. It is a call to people around the globe to save our planet for future generations. LG Electronics has since 1994, continually endeavoured to manufacture products that are healthy for you as well as being healthy for our planet.

It is through initiatives like this that LG supports the quest for reducing the ecological impact on the world through its Healthy for you, Healthy for our planet campaign. LG manufactures products that are environmentally friendly and energy efficient focusing on consumer health benefits.

In 1994, when environmental sustainability did not feature on many organisations’ radars, LG had the intention of creating a cleaner planet and protecting people's health through its development of eco-friendly products. It established an environmental management strategy for the development of eco-friendly products and now also supports various environmental protection activities. LG also remains one of the only electronics companies committed to carrying out the necessary research in order to discover more efficient methods of taking back and recycling end-of-life electronic products.

By developing products that are healthy for you and healthy for the planet, LG subconsciously gives consumers the opportunity to do their bit to conserve energy, ensure their own wellbeing and that of the earth.

The LG eco-development initiatives permeate across all of its products:

Mobile Phones -- harmful materials are replaced with healthier alternatives and increasing energy efficiency and recyclability. At present, no lead, cadmium, and other EU RoHS materials are used in the production of LG mobile phones. The use of nickel is also banned due to the risk of skin irritation. Halogen substances have now been removed from all parts that are used in the housing, packaging, and the main PCB, and on-going research is being conducted into making the PVC used in cables more eco-friendly.

Washing Machines - The LG Steam Washing Machine was designed to make efficient use of resources and to reduce energy consumption. The use of hazardous, heavy metals has been avoided in the production of this product, and the noise level, size, and weight have also been greatly reduced. The Direct Drive motor in LGs washing machines reduces electricity consumption by up to 16 percent, and the noise level has fallen by 10 dB. The steam function has reduced electricity consumption by 51percent and water consumption by 44 percent, while increasing its washing capacity by 21percent and maximising energy efficiency.

TVs – The LG Plasma and LCD TVs require significantly fewer parts in production reducing the amount of harmful materials being used in production. From the outset of LG TVs are designed to reduce resource consumption while the vast majority of components are recyclable. The LG TV line up includes the most efficient LCD television, the LG Scarlet, which uses 69 percent less electricity through its innovative light sensing and LED technology.

Notebook Computers – Energy consumption in standby on an LG notebook computer has been reduced to less than 1 W. The amount of noise emitted by the computers has also been reduced thanks to fans that use a silent blade.

Air Conditioners – Air conditioners, contrary to popular perception, are the most efficient means of climate controlling a room. LG is the only manufacturer of air conditioning units to boast a South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) certification for energy efficiency. Units also use, silver nano and neo-plasma technologies to purify the air and ensure that the environment is healthy for you and healthy for the planet
