LG Electronics and Corning Announce Sustainable Glass Solution for Display System

CORNING, N.Y. — Corning Incorporated (NYSE: GLW) today announced its continued collaboration with a global innovator in technology, known as consumer electronics and vehicle component solutions, LG Electronics (LG) to provide sustainable glass solutions for innovative, curved automotive interior displays. The two companies combine vehicle electronics and cover glass expertise to help drive in-car connectivity for a premium European automaker’s curved display—and do it while achieving a smaller carbon footprint.
Automakers are envisioning new and immersive driving experiences that also deliver on industry climate goals and initiatives. With its combined instrument cluster and center stack display, the premium European automaker’s curved display harmoniously integrates digital and analogue controls in a design that appears to float on the dashboard in front of the driver. LG’s focus on extended experiences with in-vehicle infotainment system technology has ushered in this new era of connectivity and sophistication while Corning’s patented ColdForm™ Technology helps bring it to life in a sustainable and economical way.

An independent third-party study measured the environmental impacts of Corning’s patented ColdForm™ Technology and found glass curved using ColdForm Technology’s carbon footprint is at least 25% lower than traditional glass curved using heat, producing 14.5M less kg of CO2 for every 1M sq. ft. of glass produced. With ColdForm™ Technology, glass is bent at room temperature and fits to its final shape at the end of the module-assembly process performed by LG and its industry partners. In addition, by completing the manufacturing process in its flat state, Corning’s Gorilla Glass parts have uniform optical coatings, precise decoration, and can be produced at high yields.
