Ice or Frost Behind the Front Grille

Frost or ice behind the front grille of an air conditioner is usually the result of blocked or slow air flow. If air flow across the coil is restricted the coil may become too cold. Once it drops below freezing, condensed moisture on the coil will freeze instead of falling into the pan on the unit. This will cause the air conditioner to be unable to cool the room effectively.

If it has been more than 2 weeks since the air filter was last cleaned, it may need to be cleaned. Pull the inlet grille forward and remove the air filter from the front grille. Wash the filter using lukewarm water below 104°F. Gently shake the excess water from the filter and replace.

If the outside temperature is below 65°F, allow the frost to melt. One the outside temperature is warmer, try running the unit to test to see if the problem is corrected.
