Open the respective app.
For Messenger, tap the settings icon in the upper right and select Default SMS app.
Choose the app you want to use for SMS.
For Hangouts, tap the menu handle in the upper left and select Settings > SMS enabled
and choose the app you want to use for SMS or SMS disabled and select YES
to set Hangouts as default.
