Can you use dryer sheets in this machine?

Asked by: Susan23
There is no caution against using dryer sheets in the ENERGY STAR® Qualified LG 7.4 cu.ft. Ultra Large Capacity TurboSteam™ Electric Dryer w/ On-Door Control Panel, Model # DLEX5005K. The biggest concern with regards to using dryer sheets in this type of dryer is that because dryer sheets are small pieces of non-woven synthetic fabrics coated with a solution of a quaternary ammonium salt or a silicone oil based fabric softener, and when heated, the heat of the dryer softens the fabric softener and allows the coating to transfer to fabrics. It is this coating that makes clothes feel softer to the touch. The use of fabric softener dryer sheets won't permanently damage your dryer but they may effect its operating efficiency, and, when efficiency is reduced, your utility bills go higher. Just as the dryer sheets leave a residue on your clothing that makes the fabric feel softer, they also leave residue in your dryer. The dryer also has a cycle that prevents overdrying of clothes by detecting moisture levels and turning off the cycle when the load is dry that operates using an electronic moisture sensor that is embedded in the dryer drum. Dryer sheets can cause the electronic moisture sensor to become coated with chemical residue, preventing the sensor from working correctly and cause your clothing to overdry (and increase your utility costs). However, periodic maintenance of the dryer can prevent this. If you use dryer sheets, wipe off the sensor with a cotton ball and a little rubbing alcohol monthly...^IFV
