What People Are Saying

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great machine. Quiet, fast, affordable, screen B+ I use this in a professional music studio and it's rock solid. I appreciated the lack of extra programs that were not loaded by LG. Set up was fast and easy. It's incredibly light, and the battery is great, so those using it on the go should be happy. Case is solid with minimal flex. Not a 2001 Mac Book Pro solid, but pretty darn nice for a 17" machine.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very Nice Very light weight for its size, but battery life shorter than advertised by about 6 hours on simple task work with energy savings features on. Resolution is very nice, but start up is slower than it should be using SSD. Also, the fingerprint reader is quite touchy, often requesting retouches. The power port is narrow and the wiring is flimsy so that will be an issue down the road.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good Hardware, Acceptable Software, Lack Support. I bought this laptop recently and I would like to say the hardware is excellent. A great glossy, not matte, screen that goes to about 300 Nits brightness (quite well) and has a great quality screen. The 17" display is a marvel to have on such a light laptop and offers great use. The manufacturer has went full-on with the hardware options, giving us buyers a hefty 3 usb 3.0 type A ports (no usb 2.0!) as well as a full-size HDMI and SD Card reader with high speed reading (from my tests, almost 80 MB/s read speeds) on a class U3 micro sd card. As well, the thunderbolt 3 port is a relief as it is pcie 4x which can support the full use of an eGPU. A great addition that was not mentioned anywhere in the specification sheet. My journey with the LG Gram 2019 17" has been like a clue hunt with satisfying results. That is, in-depth information about the laptop has been quite hard to find, and mostly from external sources, not from the company itself, but it's good to find that LG put in the top-of-the-line features for their products. I just wish that the support for techincal information was MUCH better than this. Some good finds: - NVMe support on both slots, 1 slot is pcie 4x, the other is pcie 2x. - 8 GB of on-board RAM and a slot to add an extra RAM slot that can support up to (16/32GB, im not sure, but i have successfully added 16GB ram to it resulting in 24 GB ram total) - Thunderbolt 3 is specfied as pcie 4x. - Micro SD Card reader speed is quite good. Some stuff I still have not found out: - USB-C Charging Voltage/Amperes specification. No where to be found. Please answer this LG. - Screen energy rating, how much is maximum power consumption at maximum brightness in WATTAGE? No where to be found. Just an "energy star" advertisement on their screen. On the software side, beware if you reinstall or do a clean install of windows, as some of the pre-installed softwares and drivers cannot be found in the support page. Some of them are notably: - LG Reader Mode - Fingerprint Reader Driver These two cannot be found anywhere when you reinstall windows on them, and you would have to work without the capability of Touch ID, a core feature of the new keyboard, because there is no driver to be found!!!! As well, if you have used LG reader mode and are happy with it, if you install a fresh windows, you can't find this anymore in the downloads, OR the LG control center OR the LG Update Center. Literally, it is gone! Hardware: 9/10 (If you add more powerful fans, there would be better performance, as now the thermals is weak but others is all 10/10) Software (their own additional software and drivers): 4/10 (because you'll run in to many problems if you install windows on your own, unless they fix this I do not recommend installing a new windows onto your ssd, even though sometimes you need to do it, beware....) Support: 2/10 (it's good that LG has some Q/A which is sometimes incorrectly answered (hint: screen is glossy, not matte), but other than that there is not much information on the laptop at all, which is quite a troublesome thing to work with when you're trying to figure out what you can do with the peripherals and additions and stuff... or any upgrades...) Overall: 6/10 If LG improves their software support and their information about technical specifications, then this rating would easily be a 9/10 or higher. But until then, that is the rating I give.

Got really excited when I first saw the Gram 17 announced at CES. Then, I read the specs on the LG product page. Why, in a $1,700 laptop, would you use a SATA3 interface rather than PCIe NVMe and why is the LAN connection only 10/100, rather than 1GB?

Asked by: YzPlayr
You should be able to use USB-C for Gigabit LAN as the port is 4-lane 40Gbit. Even the USB3.1 ports are probably at least 10Gbit.

I really like this notebook and want to buy one, but I don't use my notebook a ton, so it's hard to justify paying that much. An i5 with 8GB of RAM and 256GB SSD would be much easier on the wallet. Is there something like this coming anytime soon?

When will this actually be available? When I click on where to buy, it says it's in stock at Best Buy, but their website says it's sold out, and Amazon says they don't know when it will be in stock.

Asked by: lightlaptop
When those retailers give the availability status for the LG gram 17” Ultra-Lightweight Laptop with Intel® Core™ i7 processor, Model # 17Z990-R.AAS8U1 as "Temporarily Out of Stock" it means that the laptop was available but sold out. Regrettably, we do not have access to any retailer's inventory and that information is proprietary. Amazon has a message under its "Temporarily Out of Stock" alert that says, "Order now and we'll deliver when available. We'll e-mail you with an estimated delivery date as soon as we have more information. Your account will only be charged when we ship the item." The Best Buy location in your zip code may show it as being "Sold Out", but other stores in a different zip code show it as being available. You can contact Best Buy's Customer Service or their Sales Associates to ask if it can be ordered from another Best Buy location that has stock and either have it shipped to you or pick it up from another store if it is close to you...^IFV
