LG Solar’s NeON® 2 Panels Produce More Power During Peak Energy Hours

Did you know many utilities charge more for electricity during the hours when consumers use it most? Standard electricity plans charge the same rate throughout the day, but some utilities are now offering Time-of-Use (TOU) plans to customers.1 These plans involve charging more during “peak” hours, when electricity demand is highest (often in the late afternoons). Utilities across the country are rolling out TOU rates. More than 20 million customers have a Time-of-Use rate, and millions more will be added very year.2

About half of U.S. investor-owned utilities currently have optional time varying rates for residential customers, and new programs are being tested in at least ten states. As more utilities and states are likely to consider implementing these plans, it’s important for customers who install solar panels to be ready.

In developing our NeON® 2 solar modules, LG Solar’s goal was to provide the highest possible value for consumers who want to save money by going solar. How did we do it? The NeON® 2 has a double-sided cell structure that enables our solar panels to capture light and generate energy from both the front and back, even when the angle of light is lower, such as in the mornings and evenings.

LG Solar now manufactures 500 MW of NeON® 2 modules in Huntsville, AL, assembling them in our U.S. factory from imported parts. LG Solar NeON® 2 panels manufactured and assembled in Huntsville also feature our award-winning Cello (Cell connection with Electrically Low loss, Low stress, and Optical absorption enhancement) Technology™, developed by LG to increase power output and improve panel appearance. Cello Technology™ incorporates 12 wires into each cell instead of the usual 3-5 busbars. The circular-shaped wires help the cells absorb light more and and enable electrons to flow more freely through the panel, boosting output and module efficiency.

NeON® 2 solar panels are also less vulnerable to performance losses due to micro-cracks and erosion, boosting long-term reliability—and because our modules use N-type cells, they experience very low degradation rates when first exposed to sunlight.
