Food Storage Tips - Refrigerator

Operation Refrigerators Last Updated 09/22/2015
  • Do not block the air vents of the refrigerator when you are loading food items. This can cause items nearest to the vents to freeze and result in poor cooling throughout the rest of the compartment.

  • Do not store food with high moisture content towards the top of the refrigerator. The moisture could come in direct contact with cold air from the vents and freeze.

  • Wash food before storing it in the refrigerator. Vegetables and fruit needs to be washed and food packaging should be wiped down before being stored next to other food items.

  • If the refrgierator is in a hot or humid location, opening the door frequently or storing lots of vegetables will cause condensation to form. If this happens, wipe off the condensation with a paper towel or cloth.

  • Avoid leaving the refrigerator and freezer doors opened for extended time periods. Warm air that enters the compartments will raise the overall temperature and will cause the unit to use more electricity.

  • If you plan on leaving for a short vacation, the refrigerator should be left on. Refrigerated items that can be frozen will stay preserved longer if you store them in the freezer while you are away.
