Bafana’s Matthew Booth appointed LG’s Green ambassador
JOHANNESBURG, 25 February 2010 - LG Electronics South Africa has appointed Matthew Booth, Bafana Bafana’s most supported defender and South Africa’s best dressed sportsman and his wife Sonia Bonneventia, an internationally-renowned model, to be their official Green Ambassadors.
“Matthew and Sonia Booth’s unique style, technical skill, and leadership qualities are synonymous with LG’s brand pillars of stylish design, smart technology and, reliability, culminating in a perfect partnership that signifies harmony and strength,” explains Dr. Michelle Potgieter, Marketing Director, LG Electronics South Africa. “In the lead up to the World Cup, they will be our primary ambassadors positioning us as a green, eco-friendly, reliable and sophisticated brand.”
LG Electronics announced its Environmental Proclamation in 1994, with its environmental policy. LG Electronics’ environmental policy is centered around its “Life’s Good when it’s Green” program. The program, “Life’s Good when it’s Green” is divided into two areas: manufacturing and product. The program aims to instil environmentally sound practices across the entire product life cycle, and divides the approach into two focus areas: manufacturing and product.
Based on this program, the goal is to reduce green house gases from manufacturing and product, by 150 000 and 30 000 tons, respectively, by 2020. Reduction of green house gases emitted during the product’s life cycle (raw material, distribution, product usage, disposal, etc) will be carried out in stages.
“At LG, we have a social responsibility towards the environment and are actively fulfilling our obligation to reduce green house gas emissions worldwide, by designing and manufacturing products that are energy-and water efficient. So entrenched is this philosophy and responsibility, that even our blood is green!”
“This commitment commences with the design of LG products, by designing products that are the most eco-friendly and continues all the way through to production. This means that LG effectively eliminates the use of hazardous substances during every stage of the production process while ensuring that energy consumption and green processes are always adhered to.”
In terms of functionality, our products display eco-friendly technology.
· The recently launched LG SL90, the popular Borderless LED LCD TV, uses up to 76 percent less energy than a regular LCD television. (The 76 percent energy saving was confirmed by several other testing agencies: the Korea Electric Testing Institution; the Center for Electrical Power Information and Technology Studies at the University of Indonesia; and the Underwriters Laboratory, a world leader in product safety testing and certification located in the US.)
· The LG Steam Washer uses 40 percent less water than conventional machines and therefore uses less energy. This is according to the certification from the British Allergy Foundation - BAF.
· The LG Inverter air conditioner has recently received SABS certification, for energy efficiency. The unit was tested for 72 hours at maximum rated voltage under climatic conditions of 27 degrees Celsius indoor and 35 degrees Celsius outdoor room temperatures. The kilowatt hour (kWh) consumption at the end of 72 hours was 76,8kWh - the lowest in its class.
“We want to build a resource-recyclable society that is able to reduce the use of resources by using LG products, and so create a cleaner, healthier and sustainable planet - for all. This is even more prudent in South Africa where energy and water are scarce resources,” continues Potgieter.
And by using Booth and Bonneventia, LG has a couple that not only embodies our brand ethos; they are just as passionate about the environment as we are.
“When it comes to style, reliability, technology and innovation, Sonia and Matthew truly represent the perfect partnership. We trust that this joint venture will support and strengthen LG’s 2010 Green Campaign which is aimed to illustrate and communicate our earnest commitment to manufacturing and supplying eco-friendly”, concludes Dr.Potgieter.
