LG Air Conditioner - Regular A/C Maintenance

At a Glance

Conducting regular maintenance on your air conditioner can help to ensure that your unit performs at its best. The air conditioner filter needs to be periodically cleaned or replaced, depending on the type of filter your model uses.

Try This

Select your air conditioner unit for maintenance tips.

    • The air filter should be cleaned every two weeks. Depending on indoor air quality, more frequent cleaning may be needed. A dirty air filter will decrease airflow and reduce efficiency.

      Note

Before attempting any maintenance on your AC unit other than the "Auto Clean" mode, power the unit off and unplug it from the electrical receptacle.

      1. Grasp the grip at the top center of the filter and pull out the filter directly.
      2. Use a vacuum cleaner brush attachment to clean the filter. If the filter is heavily soiled, it can be washed in warm water using a mild detergent.

        Note

Do not use harsh cleaners or very hot water. Do not wash in a dishwasher.

      3. Allow the filter to dry completely before reinstalling.
      4. Reinsert the filter, making sure that the bottom of the filter is between the tabs and the coil guard. Reinstall the filter cover, making sure it clips into place.

      Note

Before attempting any maintenance on your AC unit other than the "Auto Clean" mode, power the unit off and unplug it from the electrical receptacle.

      1. With the air conditioner running in COOL, DRY, ENERGY SAVER, or HEAT mode, press the auto clean button (On the remote).

        Note

Auto clean is ONLY located on the remote and is not available on all models.

      2. Auto clean will be displayed in the LCD display.
      3. Press the [POWER] button to turn the air conditioner off. Auto clean will run the circulation and exhaust fans with the compressor off for a few minutes after the power is turned off.

    • Keeping your portable AC looking clean and new is easy. Wipe the case with a slightly damp cloth, then wipe it dry with a cloth or towel.

      1. To prevent damage to the finish, do not use gasoline, benzene, thinner, etc., or any abrasive cleansers to clean the air conditioner.
      2. Never pour water onto or into the unit; it could damage internal components and create a shock and fire hazard.

    • Important

Before performing any maintenance on your unit, please ensure the unit is powered off and unplugged from the power supply.

Check the air filter at least twice a month to see if cleaning is necessary. Trapped particles in the filter can build up and block the airflow that can reduce cooling capacity and cause an accumulation of frost on the evaporator.

      1. Open the filter housing by pulling the inlet grille forward.

      2. Remove the air filter from the front grille by pulling the air filter up slightly.

        1. Wash the filter using lukewarm water below 104°F (40°C).
        2. Gently shake away excess water from the filter, allow it to air dry, and reinstall the filter.

      3. Reset the Clean Filter indicator (if needed).

        • After cleaning the filter, press Temp ∧ and ∨ together on the control panel for 3 seconds to turn off the Clean Filter light.
        Note

The filter reset must be done using the control panel, not the remote control.

    • To ensure continued peak efficiency the evaporator coils (inside behind front grille) and condenser coils (outside of the unit) should be checked periodically and cleaned if they've become dirty or clogged with soot.

Evaporator Coils: Remove the front grill, use a brush attachment with a vacuum cleaner to clean up any dust or debris that has made it past the air filter. If you are cleaning the coils after the air conditioner has already been running, put the unit in fan mode for about an hour in order to allow any condensed moisture on the evaporator coils to dry.

Condenser Coils: If possible, use a brush attachment with a vacuum cleaner to remove any dirt or debris that has build up from the outside. If using the vacuum isn't an option, you can use a hose to clean the condenser coils. Remove any garden sprayer attachments and allow the water to flow directly from the end of the hose down over the coils to wash away dirt and debris.

      Note

The fins are sharp so take care when cleaning them. Do NOT bend the fins. If this happens accidentally you can purchase a fin comb from a local hardware store. The fin comb can be used to straighten any bent fins.

    • When it comes to keeping the case of the A/C looking new and clean, just follow these simple guidelines:

      • The front grille and inlet grille may be wiped with a cloth dampened in a mild detergent solution.
      • The cabinet may be washed with mild soap or detergent and lukewarm water.
