LG G2 INTRODUCES A NEW DIRECTION IN SMARTPHONE DESIGN

Sydney, Aug. 8, 2013 — LG Electronics Australia (LG) today unveiled its latest flagship smartphone LG G2, the first smartphone introduced under LG’s new “G” Series for premium devices. The global introduction of the device took place at the renowned Frederick P. Rose Hall, Home of Jazz at Lincoln Centre in New York. The LG G2 exemplifies LG’s aim to bring forth more customer-centric innovations. Based on LG’s research of consumer lifestyle and behaviors, the smartphone offers users real-life benefits such as ergonomic design, practical software enhancements and innovative connectivity solutions.
“Our definition of innovation today is technology that reflects our new brand position of ‘It’s All Possible’ and delivers new and exciting products for our Australian customers,” said Lambro Skropidis, Marketing General Manager for LG Electronics Australia.
On top of the global announcement, LG is also pleased to announce that their most impressive smartphone to date, the G2, will be made available to Optus customers on their new 4G network.
“We are delighted to be partnering with Optus to launch the LG G2 in Australia as it demonstrates our focus on delivering world class technology that compliments the specific 4G network requirements of Optus, and delivers a more compelling user experience. The R&D investments made by LG means that LG G2 will be one of only a very small number of new handsets this year that support Optus’ 4G LTE network strategy, which is being rolled out across Australia. Our commitment to allocating global R&D resources to a market like Australia is evidence of LG’s ongoing focus to build a strong local business in the premium end of the smartphone market,” added Jonathan Banks, Head of Mobile Communications at LG Electronics Australia.
Rohan Ganeson, Managing Director, Sales at Optus said, “We’re pleased to be bringing the LG G2 to Australia exclusively on Optus’ superfast 4G network with dual TD and FD-LTE technology. When the G2 hits Optus stores, scheduled for November, it will open the door to greater 4G capacity for data hungry Australians as the Optus TD-LTE network rolls out. Meaning more downloads, better browsing and faster streaming.”
The Optus 4G TD-LTE network is currently live in Canberra, and is being rolled out progressively across metro Australia to build a combined TD/FD-LTE 4G network over the coming year.
New Perspective in Smartphone Design
The LG G2 brings everything together in a device with a comfortable, functional, convenient and beautiful design. The LG G2 shifts the paradigm in smartphone design by placing all the buttons on the rear of the device, making this the first smartphone to be completely devoid of buttons on the sides of the device. The Rear Key concept comes from the realisation when studying users that the larger the phone became, the more difficult it was to properly access side buttons. Moving the main buttons to the back of the phone gives users more control since this is where individuals’ index fingers are naturally positioned. Furthermore, this is perfect for left and right-handed users. Researchers also found that moving the buttons also resulted in fewer dropped phones when adjusting the volume while talking.
Long-pressing on the rear-mounted volume keys allows users to launch QuickMemoTM and the camera, making note-taking and self-portraits even easier than before. And if the LG G2 is lying on a surface face up, there’s no need to lift the phone to press the power button on the back. With KnockON, the LG G2 can be powered on by simply tapping twice on the display.
Edge-to-Edge Display and Best-In-Class Power Capacity
LG has upped the ante by incorporating a 5.2-inch Full HD display in the LG G2, the largest display designed for one-handed operation in today’s popular 68 – 72mm wide smartphones. In addition to the expansive viewing experience, LG’s innovative Dual Routing technology reduces the phone’s bezel to a mere 2.65mm on the side edge by redesigning the routing of electrical connectors to the display, thus reducing the space required. Proven screen IPS technology in the LG G2 renders outstanding graphics in near true to life colour and delivers clear images with increased viewing angles.
Moreover, the LG G2 employs Graphic RAM (GRAM) for more efficient energy usage. GRAM reduces the display’s energy use by up to 26 per cent on a still frame and increases overall usage time on the device by approximately 10 per cent. With a generous 3,000mAh stepped design battery that is shaped to take maximum advantage of the limited interior space, the LG G2 is more than ready for a full day’s work.
Practical User Experience (UX) Connected with Everyday Life
LG G2 comes with a number of user experience (UX) features that provide practical value by focusing on consumers and how they interact with their smartphone in their everyday life:
> Answer Me — Automatically lowers the ringtone when the phone is raised to one’s ear and auto answers the call.
> Plug & Pop — Provides a visual pop-up on screen which recommends options or related features to choose from when the earphone or USB cable is inserted.
> Text Link — Information embedded in text messages can be selected and easily saved in the memo or calendar and searched on a map or the internet.
> QuickRemote — Integrated universal remote feature that enables control of almost any infrared enabled device – such as TV, air conditioners, BluRay Players etc. It comes preloaded with over 90% of consumer electronic devices and can learn new codes for non pre-loaded devices. The layout can be customised, voice commands can be used, and the remote can be programmed to be location aware so that it appears on the phones lock screen when you enter a designated WiFi zone. (for example when you get home)
> Slide Aside — Enables easier multitasking by simply “sliding” open apps off to the side of the screen using a three-finger swipe
> Guest Mode — Restricts access to applications on the device by setting a separate lock screen pattern. For example, a child can be given access to only a limited range of applications, such as games, and prevented from accessing all other areas of the handset.
Optical Image Stabilizer (OIS) and High Resolution for Great Pictures
The LG G2 comes equipped with Optical Image Stabilizer (OIS) technology to minimise blurring, allowing for clearer and sharper images when in motion or when shooting in low light environments. The G2 offers a 13MP camera and OIS technology in a slim design without a protruding lens. And features such as Super Resolution and Multi-point Auto Focus helps keep everything in focus, bringing the experience closer to a standalone point-and-shoot digital camera.
Studio Quality HD Audio
In recent years, there has been an increase in consumer demand for superior sound in smartphones as high quality multimedia content becomes more widely consumed. Smartphones have become hubs for entertainment of all kinds — TV shows, movies, games etc — and consumers expect the audio to be just as good as the visual experience. The LG G2 is the first smartphone on the market today to support up to 24-bit/192kHz HD audio playback that produces studio-like quality sound, far superior to a CD. Consumers can now hear fine detail previously not available on a smartphone.
The LG G2 runs on the industry’s most advanced mobile chipset, Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ 800 Processor and redefines the smartphone experience through stunning performance, rich graphics and outstanding battery efficiency. Through its long-term partnership with Qualcomm, LG is able to deploy the chipset integrated perfectly with the hardware to offer a powerful and stable performance.
Following the global launch event in New York City on August 7, the LG G2 will be rolled out globally with over 130 carriers in the next eight weeks, starting with South Korea. The LG G2 will be available in Australia in Q4, 2013, through Optus retail channels as a post-paid handset (pricing and plans will be released closer to the time of launch), and for outright sale at select retail partners for an indicative RRP of $699.
