What You Need to Know about Video

What is Blu Ray?

The Picture

This next generation optical disc format brings you the highest Full HD 1080p experience. That means it allows you to get the best picture quality available from your HDTV. It even improves old DVDs. 1080p upscaling improves their picture quality so they look their best in Full HD.

The Capabilities

Blu Ray utilizes the latest laser technology, offering up to 5 times the digital detail of traditional DVDs. More detail means more room for cool features and extra content.

The Sound

Blu Ray lets you enjoy the best sound available for your entertainment. Supports the latest advanced digital audio formats for stunning and realistic surround sound.

What Do The Letters "DVD" Actually Stand For?

DVD stands for “Digital Versatile Disc”. DVDs can be used for storing video, audio, still image, or computer data. Many people refer to DVD as a Digital Video Disc, however, technically, this is not correct.

What is HDMI?

However, an HDMI output, can transfer a digital video and audio source signal (such as from a DVD player) digitally, without conversion to analogue. This results in a pure transfer of all of video information from the digital video source to a HDMI or DVI (via a connection adapter) equipped TV. In addition, HDMI can transfer both video and audio signals.

The Upscaling Process

1080i represents 1,920 pixels displayed across a screen horizontally and 1,080 pixels down a screen vertically. This arrangement yields 1,080 horizontal lines, which are, in turn, displayed alternately. In other words, all the odd lines are displayed, followed by all the even lines.

What is the purpose of DVD Regions?

The purpose of DVD Regions is to allow motion picture studios to control several aspects of their DVD movie releases, including content, release date, and price.

MIXED EMOTIONS I purchased the RC689D to transfer numerous VHS tapes to DVD using the 'Dubbing' feature. I found the instructions on Page 60 of the Owner's manual too basic. The main objection was the lack of information on how to title and then 'finalise' a disc. No doubt if I had had time to read through the whole manual, I might have gleaned this information but it is a very complex piece of equipment, and LG should have anticipated the difficulties that could be expected from the majority of it's customers - technical and/or non-technical. The instructions should be more specific in the dot points under the different operational topics, such as 'Dubbing". I had to sacrifice a number of DVD blanks until I worked it out. I am happy now but I drove myself and my friends mad trying to get started. 21 November 2011
Does not do what we bought it to do. We bought this Product yesterday. We already have a VCR player which is a combination unit with a TV - no external outputs and a 14" screen will not allow us to store or practically watch our videos We purchased the RC689D in order to archive our collection of taped TV shows, legitimate purchased Disney Videos, and the Home Movies we have collected over 20 years. Protected titles will not record, so dont buy it if thats what you want it for. I dont have a problem with this, but it should have been made clear before the Point of Sale. There IS a clear note in the instructions about this, but as they are all taped up inside the box, you already have it home and unpacked before you find out it will not do it. We tried to record 4 tapes - 1x Bought movie, 2x Home taped TV movies and 1x Home videos. On playback, all had a really annoying "helicopter" sound overdubbed on both the playback and on the recorded version. We tested the original tapes on our other machine and the helicopter noise was absent - I dont WANT my home video of my new baby to have a Helicopter in the background - especially just outside her bedroom window! On playback of two titles, the tracking had trouble keeping up. ON one, the music tone wavered so much that it was unlistenable - a legitimate copy of Phantom Menace just isnt the same without the music score! On another, taped at home from the TV, Arnie was lost in a snowstorm - no doubt blown up by the rotor wash from the helicopter circilng overhead - and whilst he DOES emerge from a frozen pool, there isnt supposed to be a full whiteout that stops you watching ANY of the film. Snow? this was a blizzard! Judge Dredd was terrible - aside from the plot, the story, and the acting, none of which we could enjoy as it was again obliterated by snow and a helicopter. We tested all of the tapes on our other VCR player, and, with the limitations of a 14" screen and mono sound, all were as good as they should be. In closing, we took 5 hours to decide that this machine does not do what we bought it for. Its a nice looking machine, but I already have furniture, and as soon as I get home on Thursday (late night opening) It is being returned to the shop. It's already boxed up and ready to go. Also - why can we not rate is Zero stars? 13 November 2011
Disappointed. The electronics are great, a visual picture improvement. the mechanics not so, in most cases the automatic rewind fails to engage,so everything moves bar the tape. 8 September 2011
