My LG refrigerator makes a loud noise when ice drops into the bin. How can I reduce it?

Troubleshooting

Noise from the ice maker in your LG refrigerator is usually normal. You may hear sounds when ice drops into the ice bin or when water is supplied to make ice.
If the sound of ice dropping at night (such as a thud or rattling) is bothersome, use the [Night Quiet Mode] feature in the LG ThinQ app to prevent ice from dropping during selected hours.

Important Notes

  • If you hear unusually loud knocking or tapping sounds when water is supplied, the water hose may not be secured properly. We recommend contacting LG Customer Support for assistance.
  • To use [Night Quiet Mode], your refrigerator must be registered in the LG ThinQ app on your smartphone.
  • Models that do not support the LG ThinQ app cannot use the [Night Quiet Mode] feature.

Why does the ice maker make noise?

There are two main reasons why your refrigerator's ice maker may make noise.

1. Ice dropping noise (such as a thud or rattling)

Noise caused by ice dropping from the ice maker in a refrigerator with a water dispenser.

This sound occurs when ice drops into the ice bin. The noise level may vary depending on the amount of ice in the bin.
For Craft Ice™, the ice drops onto a rubber pad at the bottom of the bin to help reduce noise.

2. Water valve or pipe vibration noise (such as buzzing or clicking)

Noise caused by the water valve and water lines vibrating at the bottom rear of the refrigerator with a water dispenser.

You may hear this sound when the water valve at the back of the refrigerator operates while water is dispensed or supplied to the ice maker.

How can I reduce the sound of ice dropping from the ice maker?

If the sound of ice dropping is too loud at night, try setting [Night Quiet Mode] in the LG ThinQ app.
During the selected time period, the ice maker will stop dropping ice.

Step 1. Open the LG ThinQ app on your smartphone and select your registered refrigerator.

Step 2. Select [Night Quiet Mode] in the refrigerator settings menu.

Step 3. Set the time period when you want quieter operation (Example: 10 PM to 7 AM).

Step 4. Tap [Save] to complete the setup. (※ If you need more ice, set the feature to [Off] or shorten the time period.)
