[LG refrigerator frost] Icicles and frost form in the freezer.

Troubleshooting

Did icicles form in the top of the freezer? Is frost forming on shelves or on food inside the freezer?

Causes and Symptoms

  • Indoor humidity is high during the rainy season.
  • Hot food was immediately put in the freezer.
  • High-moisture food was put in the freezer without using an airtight container.
  • The freezer door is not closing properly.
  • The refrigerator has been turned back on.

Icicles and frost will form on the walls of the refrigerator or food surfaces when moisture in the air comes in contact with the cold air in the refrigerator.
This is a normal phenomenon that occurs when the refrigerator is functioning properly and is not a malfunction of the machine.
When removing frost, wipe it with a clean washcloth on a clear, dry day and then wipe it dry with a dry towel.
Remove icicles by melting them with a warm washcloth and then wipe the area again with a dry towel.
If the icicles form frequently, check if outside air is coming in through a gap in the refrigerator door.

Warning!

Be cautious as the refrigerator can be damaged if the frost is removed using a trowel or a sharp knife.

Is the refrigerator installed in a place with high humidity or near windows?

➔ It is recommended that the refrigerator is installed in a place where the ambient temperature is 5-43℃, dry, and well-ventilated.

If the refrigerator is installed in a location such as a balcony or next to a window where moist and cold air from outside can easily enter, frost or icicles may build up in the freezer.

Is hot food put in the freezer directly without cooling it first?

➔ Cool the hot food first before placing it in the freezer.

Hot food produces steam as it cools. When this steam comes into contact with the cold air in the freezer, it becomes frost.

Warm food in the freezer

Is food with high moisture levels stored in the freezer without being sealed airtight?

➔ Store food in airtight containers or plastic bags.

The moisture from the food may come in contact with the cold air in the freezer, causing frost to form.

Wrong example: food left unsealed. Correct example: Sealed and stored food.4

Is the freezer door not closed properly, allowing outside air to enter the freezer?

➔ Check the contents below and close the freezer door completely.

If the freezer door is not tightly sealed, moisture in the outside air combined with cold air can cause frost or icicles to form in the freezer.
After cleaning the freezer, reassemble the drawers or shelves into their proper positions.
If there is too much food in the compartment, take some of the food out.
If the door gasket becomes sticky due to contaminants, clean it, and do so regularly.

Has there been a power outage for a long period of time? Has the refrigerator been turned off and back on to generate new cold air?

➔ During the power outage, the air inside the refrigerator that has warmed will cool once again when the power is restored, but the temperature difference may cause any moisture in the air to condense into frost.

After a week or two of use, the moisture inside will eventually evaporate, causing the frost to naturally dissipate.
The temperature inside the refrigerator can increase while the power is turned off.
Then, when the power is turned back on, moisture in the air will start to cool, becoming frost.
When the refrigerator is filled with cold air and the operation stabilizes, internal moisture will begin to evaporate, causing frost to naturally dissipate.

The frost inside the refrigerator disappears
