If your freezer is not cold enough, you can improve its performance with a few simple steps.
First, set the freezer temperature to -8°F (-22°C) or colder. Next, rearrange your food so it does not block the cold air vents, and make sure the doors are completely closed.
Finally, remove any dust from the back of the refrigerator and keep the unit away from direct sunlight and heat sources.
Why Is the Freezer Not Cold Enough?
1. Temperature Setting
If your freezer is set to a relatively warm temperature, such as 3°F to 1°F (-16°C to -17°C), your food may begin to thaw.
2. Blocked Airflow
If the freezer is overfilled or food blocks the cold air vents, cold air cannot circulate properly and frozen food may begin to thaw.
3. Open Doors
If the doors do not close completely, warm air can enter and reduce freezing performance.
4. Poor Ventilation or Heat Exposure
Dust on the back cover, poor ventilation, direct sunlight, or nearby heat sources can decrease freezing performance.
How to Improve Freezer Cooling
Step 1. Lower the Freezer Temperature
Locate the Freezer Temperature button on the display and set it between -8°F and -11°F (-22°C and -24°C).
The temperature changes by 1°C each time you press the button.
Step 2. Clear the Air Vents
Move food away from the vents so cold air can circulate. Store food that thaws easily, such as ice cream or minced garlic, farther inside the freezer where the temperature changes less.
Step 3. Check the Doors
Rearrange any food or containers that prevent the doors from closing, and push them completely shut. Avoid opening the doors more often than necessary to reduce the loss of cold air.
Step 4. Check the Installation Area and Remove Dust
Leave at least 4 inches (10 cm) of space between the refrigerator and the wall.
Ensure the room temperature is between 41°F and 109°F (5°C and 43°C).
Unplug the refrigerator, then use a vacuum cleaner to gently remove dust from the outside of the back cover.
Step 5. Still Need Help?
If the issue persists after following the steps above, you can get further support through LG Chatbot on our website or by requesting a technician visit.

Warning
- Do not remove the back cover of your refrigerator. Removing it can expose electrical components and refrigerant tubing, leading to electric shock, severe injury, or product damage.
FAQ
- Q. Why Isn’t a New Refrigerator Freezing?
- A. Cold air begins circulating about 1 to 2 hours after you connect the power. It can take 2 to 3 days for the freezer to reach its normal operating temperature, depending on the amount of food stored.
- Q. What Is the Recommended Freezer Temperature?
- A. The recommended freezer temperature is generally between 0°F and -4°F (-18°C and -20°C). If the freezer does not feel cold enough or the room temperature is high, lower the setting to between -6°F and -11°F (-21°C and -24°C).
