Quick Machine Recovery is a Windows recovery feature that automatically connects to the Microsoft cloud to find and apply a solution when Windows fails to start.
This feature is enabled by default in Windows Home and does not require any additional installation. To use it, you need an active internet connection (wired or Wi-Fi).
When Is Quick Machine Recovery Used?
You can use Quick Machine Recovery if your PC fails to boot normally and displays any of the following symptoms or messages:
- The system freezes on a black screen during startup
- An error message appears stating “Your device ran into a problem and couldn’t be repaired”
- A message appears stating “Unable to connect to a network”
- The system does not progress past the Windows logo or remains stuck on the network connection screen
Checking Quick Machine Recovery Settings
Quick Machine Recovery is turned on by default in Windows Home. The [Automatically check for solutions] option is set to run once by default.
- Go to [Settings] → [System] → [Recovery] → [Quick Machine Recovery]
What Happens During Quick Machine Recovery?
If your PC repeatedly fails to start, Windows automatically launches Startup Repair and then enters the Quick Machine Recovery environment.
- 1.Entering Recovery Mode: When Windows detects repeated boot failures, it automatically boots into the recovery environment and starts the Quick Machine Recovery process.
- 2.Connecting to a Network (Required): An internet connection is required to search for solutions in the Microsoft cloud.
- Wired network: If an Ethernet cable is connected, the process continues automatically.
- Wireless network (Wi Fi): When the network list appears, select an available Wi Fi network and connect.
- 3. Searching for and Applying a Solution
- The PC searches the Microsoft cloud for a solution to the detected error.
- If a solution is found, it is automatically downloaded and applied.
* Note: If no solution is found, Windows may retry based on the preset interval or guide you to other recovery options.
- 4. Restarting the PC
After the recovery process is complete, the PC automatically restarts and boots into Windows.
What to Do If Recovery Fails
If Quick Machine Recovery does not resolve the issue, a black screen may appear. Press the [Enter] key to try additional recovery options.
- Reset this PC: Select [Troubleshoot] > [Reset this PC] to restore Windows to its initial state.
- Retry Windows startup: Select [Continue] to attempt to boot Windows again.
* Note: Resetting the PC may delete your stored data. Be sure to back up important files before proceeding.
How to back up data: Go to [Troubleshoot] > [Advanced options] > [Command Prompt] to copy files to an external storage device.
