For your safety, the washer door locks automatically when the inside of the washer is hot, when water remains in the drum, or when the drum is spinning.
If the washer is hot inside, wait 2–3 minutes for it to cool down. If water remains inside, run a Spin Only cycle or clean the drain filter to fully drain the water, and the door will unlock.
Caution
- Do not force the door open if the inside of the washer is hot. Hot water or steam may cause burns. Wait until the washer has fully cooled down.
- Do not pull on the locked door with excessive force. Doing so may damage the internal parts.
Common Causes
1. High Internal Temperature
Hot water or steam from the wash cycle can make the inside of the washer very hot. To prevent burns, the door stays locked until it cools down.
2. Water Remaining in the Drum or Drum Still Spinning
For your safety, the door locks automatically if water remains in the drum or if the drum is still spinning.
3. Clogged Drain Filter
If water does not drain after a spin cycle, the drain filter may be blocked by debris. Any water left inside will keep the door locked.
4. Faulty door lock switch
If the door lock switch is faulty, the door may not open.
How to Unlock the Door
Step 1. If the Door Is Hot
If the washer door feels hot, do not force it open. Wait 2 to 3 minutes for the inside of the drum to cool down, then open the door.
Step 2. If Water Remains Inside
Press the [Start/Pause] button to stop the cycle, then turn the power off and back on. Press the [Spin] button to run a Spin Only cycle and fully drain the water from the drum.
Step 3. If Water Does Not Drain After Spinning
Open the lower front cover. Open the drain hose cap and let the water drain into a container. Once the water has drained, unscrew the larger cap next to it. Rinse the filter with water to remove debris, then screw the cap back on tightly.
Step 4. If the Door Handle Is Stuck
Unplug the power cord and wait 1 to 2 minutes. Gently push the door handle inward toward the washer, then pull it forward again to open the door.

- Q. The washer door won’t open even after I unplug the power cord and try again.
- A. If the door does not open after the wash cycle is complete, the internal door lock mechanism may be faulty. Do not force the door open. Contact LG Customer Support for further assistance.
- Q. Water is leaking onto the floor after I cleaned the drain filter and put the caps back.
- A. The large drain filter cap or the drain hose cap may not be fully tightened. To prevent leaks, make sure both caps are securely tightened.
