Greenomics Celebrates The UAE’s 40th Anniversary With Focus On Sustainability For The Next 40 Years

On the eve of the 40th anniversary of the country’s the UAE Ministry of Environment and Water (MoEW) in partnership with
LG Electronics today highlighted the importance of the topic that will be discussed at its annual Greenomics conference. Launched in 2007 and jointly staged by the MoEW and LGE, the forum aims to identify environmental issues and find practical solutions that lead to positive change and sustainable development. The 2011 forum theme is carbon reduction in the energy sector.

"Many external factors connected to business & trade growth and the ever-rising population across the world contribute to the growing need for energy. Similarly, the rapid commercial growth in the UAE has increased the amount of power we consume here," said Mr. Ki Wan Kim, President of LG Electronics Middle East and Africa.

"As we look to mark the 40th anniversary of the formation of the United Arab Emirates, we must also look ahead to the next 40 years and it is imperative to no longer rely on insecure and environmentally unsustainable uses of energy."

"Commercial and government entities have a dual responsibility to recognise the impact they have on the UAE’s environment and must come together to explore ways that they can reduce carbon emissions without limiting production or sacrificing revenue."

With high power consumption across the region, this year’s conference is designed to examine opportunities and issues, principles and guidelines required to develop carbon reduction strategies and reduce the regions carbon footprint in the energy sector.

Recent research has shown that if businesses fail to take bold action in the next five years, the world will be stuck with high-emissions energy sources that will push climate change beyond the 2 degrees currently considered ‘safe’ by many scientists and officials.

"The forum speakers will discuss practical steps businesses and governments can take to help reduce carbon emissions, and will also demonstrate how the adoption of best practises from carbon reduction that aim to have a positive impact on the UAE’s ecological footprint," said Mr. Kim.

The conference which will take place on 24th November 2011 in Dubai, will see a keynote address from Minister H.E. Dr. Rashid Ahmad Bin Faha, from the Ministry of Environment & Water, UAE. Greenomics 2011, a half-day conference, will see a panel of experts including Jae-Yong Song, Deputy Minister, Environmental Policy Department, Ministry of Environment, Korea; Mohammed Ahmad Al Mulla Director of Metrology Department, ESMA (Emirates Authority for Standardization and Metrology) and Dr. Mattia Romani, Senior Visiting Fellow, Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and Environment, London School of Economics and Political Science; GGGI Director of Country Program and Analysis.
