HDR, or High Dynamic Range, lets your TV show more detail in both bright and dark areas by expanding contrast, brightness, and color. To enjoy HDR, you need three things: a TV that supports HDR, a source that can play HDR, and content made for HDR.

HDR has been a major upgrade for TV picture quality in recent years, but many people misunderstand how it works. Seeing "HDR" on a spec sheet doesn’t guarantee a better picture. The TV, the source, and the content all need to support HDR for it to work properly.

This guide will show you how HDR is different from standard dynamic range, how TVs use brightness, contrast, and color to create the effect, which HDR formats are important, and why sometimes HDR mode is on but the picture still looks flat.

What Is the Difference Between HDR and SDR on a TV?

The main difference between HDR and SDR is how much detail the screen can show at once. SDR, or Standard Dynamic Range, was designed for older TVs and limited what you could see. HDR removes those limits, so you get brighter highlights, deeper shadows, and more colors all at the same time.

With SDR, you often had to choose between seeing bright details or shadow details, but not both. HDR fixes this, so you can see a bright window, a dark corner, and a sunlit subject all with clear detail. This makes scenes look more like real life.

Richer Color Depth in Every Scene

HDR shows colors with more accuracy. While SDR can make colors jump from one shade to another, HDR creates smooth transitions. This means sunsets look natural, skin tones appear real, and bright reds and greens have more depth instead of looking flat.

Detail That Survives in Highlights and Shadows

With SDR, details in very bright or very dark areas often disappear. Bright spots can turn pure white, and shadows can become pure black, losing texture. HDR keeps details in both highlights and shadows, making things like metal glints, sunlit clouds, and faces look more real. This helps your TV show movies the way the creators intended.

How Does HDR Expand Brightness, Contrast, and Color?

HDR increases brightness by boosting certain parts of the picture instead of making the whole screen brighter. It improves contrast using technologies like OLED or Mini LED, which can darken specific areas. HDR also uses a wider range of colors and more color detail, so the picture looks richer. All these features work together, but each needs special hardware.

Higher Peak Brightness for True Highlights

SDR TVs can only get up to about 100 nits of brightness. New HDR TVs can reach 600 nits or even more in small bright spots. This extra brightness makes things like sunlight on water, headlights, or fire look real instead of just bright white. Because HDR targets brightness to certain areas, scenes look more vivid without making the whole picture too bright.

Deeper Black Levels for Real Contrast

Contrast means the difference between the brightest and darkest parts of the picture. High brightness doesn’t matter if the blacks aren’t deep. Brightness and contrast define dynamic range. Wide Color Gamut (WCG) defines the palette. SDR uses Rec. 709, which covers a narrow slice of what the human eye can see. HDR pairs with DCI-P3 (the cinema mastering standard) and the larger Rec. 2020 (the long-term target), both of which include reds, greens, and cyans that fall completely outside Rec. 709. The wider gamut is paired with deeper color depth: 8-bit color in SDR gives roughly 16.7 million possible values, while 10-bit color in HDR produces over a billion, which is what eliminates the visible banding in gradients SDR struggles with.

Which HDR Formats Are Worth Knowing About?

Four HDR formats are in active use: HDR10 is the universal baseline that every HDR TV and streaming service supports. HDR10+ adds scene-by-scene dynamic metadata on top of HDR10, without a license fee. Dolby Vision uses the same dynamic metadata approach with higher mastering ceilings, but is a licensed format. HLG was built specifically for live broadcast and carries no metadata at all. Most modern TVs support more than one, and which format plays depends on the content, the platform, and what the TV was licensed to decode.

The baseline format. Supported by every HDR TV, every major streaming service, and every 4K Blu-ray release.

Static metadata: One set of brightness and color instructions for the entire runtime.

No license fee: Universal hardware support, no platform gating.

Trade-off: Scenes that swing hard between bright and dark get a single mapping that fits neither extreme well.

HDR10+ for Scene-by-Scene Tuning

Per-scene instructions: Brightness and color mapping changes throughout the runtime instead of staying fixed.

Helps mid-range TVs: Sets that can't hit peak brightness still get scene-specific guidance on how to compensate.

Dolby Vision for Cinematic Precision

Dynamic metadata plus higher mastering ceilings.

12-bit color support: Roughly 68 billion color values versus 10-bit's 1 billion, smoothing gradients in extreme conditions.

Studio-first pipeline: Most major film studios master Dolby Vision, so the home image tracks the reference monitor closely.

Trade-off: Licensed format. Only available where the TV maker and streaming service both pay to carry it.

HLG for Live Broadcasts

Built by the BBC and NHK for live transmission, not streaming.

No metadata at all: One signal displays correctly on both HDR and SDR TVs, no pre-mastering required.

Live-first: Sports, news, and live events where there's no time to grade content per display type.

Broadcast pipeline: More common on satellite and over-the-air feeds than on Netflix or Prime Video.

Why Don't All Movies and Shows Look Better in HDR?

Just turning on HDR mode doesn’t mean you’ll get an HDR picture. Your TV, the device you’re using, your streaming plan, and the content all need to support HDR. If any part doesn’t, the TV either shows regular SDR or tries to fake HDR, which can look worse. Most problems come from three main issues.

Source Content Must Be Mastered in HDR

A film or show only carries genuine HDR information if it was graded for HDR during post-production, with a colorist setting brightness and color targets across the wider range the format supports. SDR content that gets re-encoded as HDR doesn't gain the missing information. The TV may apply tone mapping or upscaling, but the original master had no highlight detail, no wide-gamut color, and no extended brightness data to recover. Older catalog titles, most live broadcasts outside HLG, and lower-tier streaming releases are typically SDR no matter how the player labels them.

Streaming Tier and Bandwidth Affect Delivery

Even when the master is HDR, the version that reaches your screen often isn't. Most streaming services gate HDR behind their highest subscription tier, and many require a stable bandwidth threshold (typically 25 Mbps or higher) before they'll deliver the HDR stream. If your plan is on the standard tier or your connection drops below the threshold, the service silently falls back to an SDR version of the same title. The TV displays whatever signal it receives, so a film that exists in Dolby Vision on the platform can arrive as ordinary SDR with no on-screen indication that anything has changed.

TV Settings Can Override HDR Processing

Often, HDR doesn’t look right because of your TV’s settings, not the signal. Power-saving modes can limit brightness, and default settings might lower the backlight. Extra features like motion smoothing or color enhancers can change the picture and move it away from what the creators wanted. Using Filmmaker Mode or the HDR picture preset helps show HDR as it was meant to look.

Conclusion

HDR can truly improve how your TV looks, but only if everything works together. Your TV, the device, your streaming plan, the content, and your TV’s settings all need to support HDR. If any part is missing, the picture will look like regular SDR or sometimes even worse.
