How to Fix Closed Captions Not Showing on Your LG TV

Troubleshooting

If closed captions are not showing on your LG TV, first check your antenna connection, set-top box, and whether the broadcaster provides captions.
For standard over-the-air broadcasts, you can turn on captions in the Accessibility menu on your TV.
If you are using an external device like a set-top box or a streaming app like Netflix, you need to turn on captions directly within that device or app, rather than the TV settings.

Why Are Closed Captions Not Showing on Your LG TV?

1. Direct Antenna Connection

Closed captions work when an indoor/outdoor antenna, wall jack, or cable line is connected directly to the antenna port on the back of your TV.

2. Broadcaster Does Not Provide Captions

Even on over-the-air channels, captions will not appear if the broadcaster does not provide them for that program.

3. Using an External Device or Streaming App

When using an external device like a set-top box or a streaming app like Netflix, your TV's built-in caption settings do not apply. You need to turn on captions directly within that device or app.

How to Turn On Closed Captions

Step 1. In Your TV Settings

2026 and newer TVs (webOS 26 or later): Press [Settings] on the remote, then select [All Settings], [General], [Accessibility], [Hearing Features], [Closed Caption], then set it to On/Off.

2021 and newer TVs (webOS 6.0 or later): Press [Settings] on the remote, then select [All Settings], [General], [Accessibility], [Closed Caption], then set it to On/Off.

2020 and earlier TVs (webOS 5.0 or earlier): Press [Settings] on the remote, then select [All Settings], [Accessibility], [Closed Caption], then set it to On/Off.

Step 2. On a Set-Top Box or External Device

When using a set-top box or an external device, use that device's remote to turn on closed captions.

Step 3. In a Streaming App

Open the streaming app such as Netflix and turn on captions directly from the settings menu on the video playback screen.

Step 4. Still need help?

If the issue persists after following the steps above, you can get further support through LG Chatbot on our website or by requesting a technician visit.
