Are there icicles on the top surface inside the freezer? Is frost on the shelves in the freezer or visible on stored food?
When moisture in the air meets the cold air in the refrigerator, frost or icicles may form on the refrigerator walls or food surfaces.
This is a normal phenomenon that appears while the refrigerator is operating properly and is not a malfunction.
When removing frost, wipe with a clean cloth on a clear and dry day, then wipe with a dry towel.
Wipe the icicles with a warm cloth to dissolve them, then wipe the surface again with a dry towel.
If icicles form frequently, check whether outside air is leaking in through a gap in the refrigerator door.
Causes and Symptoms
- It is the rainy season, so indoor humidity is high.
- I put hot food directly into the freezer.
- I stored moist food in the freezer without putting it in an airtight container.
- The freezer door is not closing properly.
- I turned the refrigerator back on.
If you remove the frost with a sharp knife or an ice pick, the refrigerator may be damaged, so be careful.
Try this
Are you using the refrigerator in a place with high humidity or near a window?
➔ It is recommended that you install the refrigerator in a well-ventilated place with an ambient temperature ranging between 5℃ and 43℃ and low humidity.
Frost or icicles may form in the freezer if the refrigerator is installed in a place where moist air from outside can easily enter, such as on a balcony or next to a window.
Did you put hot food straight into the freezer without cooling it first?
➔ Do not put hot food in the freezer until after it has cooled down to some extent.
As hot food cools, it creates water vapor, and when this water vapor meets the cold air in the freezer, it becomes frost.
Have you stored moist foods in the freezer without sealing them in containers?
➔ Store food in airtight containers or plastic bags.
Moisture from food can come into contact with the cold air in the freezer, causing frost.
Does the freezer door not close properly, allowing outside air to enter the freezer?
➔ Check the contents below and close the freezer door completely.
If the freezer door is not closed tightly, moisture in the outside air may meet cold air and form icicles or frost in the freezer.
If the drawers or shelves haven’t been reassembled properly after cleaning the freezer, remove and reinsert them correctly.
If you have placed too much food in the compartment, take some of the food out.
If the rubber seal becomes contaminated and becomes sticky, clean it, and do so frequently.
Have you been without power for a long time? Is the refrigerator now producing cold air since you turned off the power and turned it on again?
→ Moisture in the air may become frost due to the temperature difference as the air that was warmed while the power was turned off cools down again.
It will disappear naturally after 1-2 weeks of use.
While the refrigerator is turned off, the temperature of the air inside the refrigerator rises.
Then, when you turn the power back on, the air cools down and the moisture in the air can become frost.
As the refrigerator becomes fully filled with cold air, the operation of the refrigerator is stabilized and moisture inside the refrigerator starts to evaporate, and the frost is naturally removed.
Is it a small refrigerator with only one door?
➔ A small one-door refrigerator is a direct cooling type product with a cooling plate (evaporator) inside that creates cold air.
Direct cooling type products have a cooling plate directly exposed to the inside of the refrigerator, resulting in frost.
If frost thicker than 1cm forms on the cooling plate, the cooling capacity may decrease.
If frost thicker than 1cm forms, set the temperature control switch to off (defrost) and let the frost on the cooling plate melt.
