If your LG refrigerator door does not close properly, first check whether food, containers, shelves, or drawers are blocking it.
If nothing is blocking the door, wipe any residue from the door gasket with a warm towel. If part of the gasket has come loose, press it firmly back into the groove.
- Make sure your refrigerator is on a firm, level floor. An uneven floor can cause the refrigerator to become misaligned and prevent the door from sealing.
- Raise the front of your refrigerator slightly higher than the back to help the door close and prevent gaps.
- The seams at the corners of the door gasket are a normal part of the manufacturing process and do not mean the gasket is torn.
Why Does the Refrigerator Door Not Close Properly?
- Food or containers extend past the shelves and block the door.
- Shelves, drawers, or bottle racks aren't installed correctly after cleaning.
- A plastic bag or food wrapper is caught in the door.
- Sticky residue or debris on the door gasket is preventing a tight seal.
- The door gasket is sagging or has come loose from the groove.
- The door wasn't reinstalled correctly after being removed during a move.
How to Fix a Refrigerator Door That Does Not Close Properly
Case 1. Rearrange Your Food, Shelves, and Drawers
Move food and containers further inside your refrigerator so they don't extend past the shelves.
Reinstall any shelves or drawers you placed incorrectly after cleaning, making sure nothing sticks out.
Check all sides of your refrigerator door and remove any plastic bags or wrappers caught in the gap.
Case 2. Clean and Adjust Your Door Gasket
Sticky residue on your door gasket may prevent the door from sealing properly.
- 1. Wet a clean towel with water and warm it up.
- 2. Wipe all four sides of your door gasket with the warm towel. Repeat two or three times.
- 3. Use a dry towel to remove any remaining moisture.
- 4. Close the door and leave it closed for at least two hours to help the gasket form a tight seal.
If part of your door gasket is loose or sagging, align it with the groove in the door and press it firmly into place. Run your hand along the gasket to make sure it is seated evenly.
Case 3. Check Your Door Installation
If you recently removed your refrigerator door during a move, make sure you reinstalled it correctly. Reinstall any parts that are in the wrong position or orientation.
Case 4. Still need help?

FAQ
- Q. Can an unlevel refrigerator prevent the door from closing properly?
- A. Your refrigerator’s position can affect how tightly the door gasket seals. Make sure your refrigerator is level from side to side. Use the front leveling legs to raise the front slightly so your door closes more easily.
- Q. Why do the left and right doors of my bottom-freezer refrigerator close at different speeds or feel different?
- A. Your refrigerator may have an auto-closing hinge to help the doors close smoothly instead of slamming shut. The left and right doors might use different components, which can make them feel different when closing. This is normal as long as both doors close completely and you do not see any condensation or frost inside.
