No Sound from a Connected External Device (Sound Bar, Bluetooth Earbuds) on Your LG TV

Troubleshooting

If you've connected an external audio device, such as a soundbar or wireless earbuds, to your LG TV but hear no sound, check the cable connections or Bluetooth pairing status.
Also, use your remote to make sure the TV's audio output is set to the correct device.

Why is there no sound from my external device?

  • A loose cable or incorrect connection port
  • The TV's sound output isn't set correctly
  • The Bluetooth device isn't in pairing mode
  • A problem with the TV

How to Fix No Sound from an External Device

Step 1. Check the connection cable between your TV and the external device

Connect it to the port on the back of your Soundbar
  • HDMI cable: Connect it to the [HDMI ARC] or [HDMI eARC] port on the back of your TV.
  • Optical cable: Make sure it's facing the right way and fully plugged in.

Step 2. Check the sound output settings on your TV

How to check your TV's webOS version

On your TV remote, press the [Settings] (gear icon) or [Mute] button three times in a row.

  • Set the output to match your connected device.
  • To change the TV's sound output: Press [Settings] on your remote, and select [All Settings], [Sound], [Sound Out]

Step 3. Pair and set up your Bluetooth device

  • Put your Bluetooth device or sound bar into pairing mode.
  • If it won't connect, temporarily turn off Bluetooth on nearby smartphones or tablets to prevent auto-pairing interference.
  • Search for the Bluetooth device on your TV and connect it.
  • 2026 and later TVs (webOS 26 and later): Press [Settings] on your remote, and select [All Settings], [Sound], [Sound Out], [Bluetooth Devices], [Connectable Devices]
  • 2021–2025 TVs (webOS 6.0–25): Press [Settings] on your remote, and select [All Settings], [Sound], [Sound Out], [Use Wireless Speaker], [Bluetooth Devices], [Connectable Devices]
  • 2020 and earlier TVs (webOS 5.0 and earlier): Press [Settings] on your remote, and select [All Settings], [Sound], [Sound Out], [Bluetooth], [Connectable Devices]

FAQ

Q. I turned on my Bluetooth device, but its name doesn't appear in the TV’s list of connectable devices.
A. Your Bluetooth device may have automatically connected to a smartphone or tablet it was previously paired with. Turn off Bluetooth on that device, put your Bluetooth device back into pairing mode, and search for it again on your TV.
Q. I connected my sound bar with an HDMI cable, but there's still no audio. What should I do?
A. Make sure the HDMI cable is connected to the port labeled HDMI ARC or HDMI eARC, not a standard HDMI port. To send audio from the TV to the soundbar through an HDMI cable, you must use an HDMI ARC or HDMI eARC port.
