What People Are Saying

Rated 1 out of 5 by from This is a terrible washing machine I've had this washer for two years - I can't seem to get through a load without it getting out of balance.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Poor quailty product I bought this washer 3 years ago I yet to this date it has never been repaired to my satisfaction. The door will not close unless I slam it close, and the entire top part of this washer is falling apart (Rusting away) but I've been told by LG that that was not covered because it cosmetic but yet rust is falling into the tub during the wash and staining our clothes.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Never again I have had this machine for about 3-4 years now, and I will NEVER again buy one like this. My loads are CONSTANTLY unbalanced, causing the machine to drain, and refill, try it again, and then beep at me to fix the load, only to do it again 5 minutes later. It doesn't seem to matter how large my load sizes are, and it happens on each setting that I have tried so far. Also, I'm finding that my clothes are not coming nearly clean enough. I like LG products, and as far as reliability goes, the washer and dryer have not given me any technical issues, but I am extremely disappointed with this machine, and considering the cost factor...not cool.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Look for something else I've had this washer for a few years now. I hate this machine. It goes off balance constantly, my sheets and blankets come out in knots and so do my clothes. Water lever is never past the clothing I put in no matter what I do. I'm always adding more water. I was very hesitant about buying another LG washer after having a front loader. Next time I will know better. This is a big disappointment.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Bought the 5170 three years ago. After a year the bleach dispenser stopped working properly. Our manual says you may remove the bleach cover to clean. Ours cannot be removed. We have called the help line several times. Get different answers from each operator. All around the bleach dispenser the machine itself has rusted out. If it had been properly painted, this should not happen. Now I have a machine with rusted paint which does not distribute the bleach properly which causes it to bleach out the next load of clothes which are not intended to be bleached! And no, it is not caused by improperly overloading the bleach measurement! I have resorted to starting the machine, letting it fill and then stopping the machine (add garments) and adding the bleach. This should not happen to a washing machine in this price range!!!!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Don't waste your money Have had this machine for a few years. Bleach input is rusted all around. When it's supposed to be washing, it makes a noise but nothing is happening other than a slight movement of the drum -- slight means less than an inch. It doesn't move. We've been married 40 years and this is the 3rd washing machine we've owned. Gee. And those old low-tech machines weren't fancy, but they sure WASHED.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Reliable Machine Great reliability, sometimes stalls due to uneven loads with large blankets, but otherwise runs smoothly and quietly. Have not had to repair yet in 2 years. Only drawback is that it seems to use a lot of water compared to other styles.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Horrible Laundry Experience Those of you with young children understand how critical it is to have a functional washing machine. Well, I have 2 kids and this washing machine has made laundry the bane of my existence. I have owned it for over 2 years and it is terrible. I completely agree with the people that have posted about it becoming unbalanced easily. I cannot do a load of towels without it becoming unbalanced, and we've tried to shift the feet, move the washer, etc, to no avail. In addition, the wash cycles are way too long--it takes at least double the time if not more to do what my old, cheap washing machine could do in 30 minutes. You know how people sometimes take their appliances with them when they move from their house? If we ever sell our house, this machine will stay with the house and I will be all too glad to be rid of it. You can put all the features you want in the machine, but if it can't perform the basic function it exists to perform there's no point. And that is the situation here.

Why do these washer go off balance constantly? My wife refuses to use the washer because you have to adjust load what seems like 5 times or more to get it to spin

Asked by: bcunningham9
We regret the trouble you have experienced with this washing machine. If this machine goes out of balance so easily, then there may be a problem with the drum, stabilizers, or the balance/leveling of the machine. It is recommended first to check the leveling of the cabinet. If this does not resolve the matter, then the unit may require service. To make service arrangements, you may either contact our Customer Interactive Center at 800-243-0000, or you can check our Repair Provider Lookup on our website, at

Washer will not do a cold water wash. Cold water properly connected. A control setting or what would be causing this?????

Asked by: Hundahl
We regret to read that your LG 4.7 cu. ft. Ultra Large Capacity High Efficiency Top Load Washer with WaveForce™, Model # WT5170HV will not do a cold wash. The issue may be due to where you live. The city of Houston supplies drinking water to its residents from surface water sources, with 70% of water coming from the Trinity River and the other 30% coming from the San Jacinto River. Because Houston's water is mineral-rich, it is considered hard water. While safe to drink, hard water can be responsible for a number of housekeeping challenges. One of those challenges As a result of the dissolved minerals present in the city's water supply, Houston residents often notice limescale accumulating on their faucets and fixtures and this can also have an effect on the efficiency of your appliances, and can wreak havoc on your plumbing when the buildup occurs in your pipes or hot water heater. There are filters on your inlet hoses where most of the limescale gets caught especially on the cold water side and there is a possibility that you have limescale build-up that may be restricting the flow of cold water to your washer. Turn your cold and hot water taps off and look inside the cold inlet hose on the end that connects to the washer to see if the filter is clogged up. If not, try reversing the how & cold water inlets and see if you still get the same flow of water for the wash cycle...^IFV

Depth including

I need to know the depth of the LG WT5170HV including pipes, etc. Does it sit flush up against a wall or does it require EXTRA clearance for hookups BEHIND the washer? 28 3/8 is listed as the depth, but how much ADDITIONAL clearance is required? Thank you.
Asked by: angelap789
One needs some additional space to accommodate hookups, including water supply. My total depth is about 34"

Casual -vs- Sports Wear cycles

Both the Perm Press/Casual and Sports Wear cycles default to warm wash temp, medium spin speed and normal soil level with Casual at 52 minutes and Sports Wear at 53 mintutes. What machine activity is different between these two cycles? And what function does this difference provide?
Asked by: LGLaundry
We appreciate your interest in this washing machine and its operations. According to our information, the different spin speed settings are programmed into the machine at different RPM rates, to allow for gentler handling of fabrics listed as Sportswear. A programming difference is also involved in the RUN/PAUSE operations during the actual wash cycle, also for gentler handling of your Sportswear materials.

Can vinegar be used in the fabric softener cup?

With the more liquid viscosity and the acidity is it OK to use vinegar in the fabric softener cup? Mostly concerned about potential damage to the machine or its finish but also whether the vinegar will dispense at the right time without sloshing out early.
Asked by: LGLaundry
We appreciate your interest in this washing machine and its proper usage. It is not recommended to use vinegar in the fabric softener cup, as the fabric softener is dispensed near the final rinse, so the fabrics could come out smelling of vinegar. Rather, it is suggested to add the vinegar to the bleach dispenser, so that it can dispense early in the wash cycle. If this is done, be certain that the bleach cup is thoroughly washed and cleaned of all bleach before the vinegar is added. Page 6 of the owner’s manual warns against the mixing of chlorine bleach and vinegar, as these can produce poisonous gas and harmful fumes.
