Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very Good Product I choose this air conditioner for a couple of reasons. I needed something large enough to cool 500 sq. feet in a west faceing house in the deep south. I also was replacing an air conditioner on a 230V system and didn't want to rewire. I have had it for three months during the heart of a very hot summer. It has done an excellent job of cooling. It is Energy Star complient and getting my first bill after a full month of use was a pleasent surprise. It came up short of five stars for two reasons. One, it's noisy. You can expect that from large air conditioners, and after a month of constant use, it quietened noticeably. Either that or I got used to it. Second, it is BIG and heavy. I live in an old house and my window sash wasn't at all happy trying to support that much weight. I strongly suggest extra support unless you have really strong windows. All things considered, expecially cooling and energy use, I highly recommend this product.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good unit So far this air conditioner has functioned very well and I consider it to be slightly better than the previous unit which was also a LG product. The new unit has slightly higher noise and vibration levels, but it is also slightly larger and hopefully it will have the same long reliable life span of the previous LG window unit it has replaced. Sadly the climate controls and cooling modes are the same as the older unit it replaced and they were the source of the few irritations we had with the older LG window air conditioner unit. The energy save feature of "sampling the air by starting the fan" is a source of noise, especially at night and in the case of our partially underground house it actually uses more energy than the air conditioners with "inferior" thermostat designs that do not periodically force air over the temperature sensor. I have no doubt your periodic forced air sampling works well in a standard home, but our partially underground home will often go hours, even on the hottest days before the unit actually needs to turn on the compressors and cool. The constant cycling to "test the air" simply waste energy and worse yet adds unneeded noise to our home, especially at night. As mentioned above the controls and operation modes on this LW1816ER are almost exactly the same as the older LG unit's controls and they have the same problem. You really need to add a few more options to the energy saver mode such as giving the user some way to widen the time intervals between the unit forcing air over it temperature sensor.
