Just purchased an LG SP80NB80 dvd writer from Best Buy. The specification label on the writer states power rating is 5volts/1.6 amps. USB 2.0 limit is 0.5 amps(500 ma) and USB 3.0 limit is .9 amps(900 ma). I do not want to damage a new iMac .

Asked by: Larry P
What version are the USB ports on your new iMac? You cannot damage your new iMAc when you plug the LG Slim Portable DVD Writer DVD Disc Playback & DVD M-DISC™ Support, Model # SP80NB80 into it. The DVD writer is not delivering power to your iMAC, it is requesting power from it and will draw as much as it requires. You can use a "Y" connector as instructed in the owner's manual to draw power from two USB ports. As you pointed out, in the USB 1.0 and 2.0 specs, a standard downstream port is capable of delivering up to 500mA (0.5A); with USB 3.0, it moves up to 900mA (0.9A). However, charging downstream and dedicated charging ports provide up to 1,500mA (1.5A). USB 3.1 bumps throughput to 10Gbps in what’s called SuperSpeed+ mode, bringing it roughly equivalent with first-generation Thunderbolt. It also supports power draw of 1.5A and 3A over the 5V bus...^IFV

Does this work with Chromebook?

Asked by: JJ2019
The LG Ultra Slim Portable DVD Writer with M-DISC™ Support, Model # GP55EX70 is not designed for Chromebooks. You will need an external DVD player for Chromebooks. You can connect the unit to a Chromebook and it will read the contents on CD, CD-RW, DVD, and DVD-RW, with no problem if they are supported file formats which means you can easily open image or audio files in ChromeOS from files on a CD or DVD. However, there are some limitations. Chromebooks do not have the necessary codecs to plays DVD files. You can connect a CD or DVD player on a Chromebook and use it to read data files if you have a disk written in data format above, but you cannot play an audio CD or a movie on a DVD or write anything to a CD or DVD. Chrome OS does not support optical disks to let you play music or movies because it doesn't come with codecs which are necessary to compress and decompress large files like DVD videos. If you want to play DVDs on your Chromebook, you’ll need to install Linux, but there is no official support...^IFV

I have the slim portable DVD writer and I am burning audio CD's with it.  Though the CDR's have 700 MB's of space, the writer will only let me burn a few songs , not anything close to 700 MB's.  It also is sketchy, sometimes it burns the whole  play list.

Asked by: need2kno
Please pardon us, but we are not clear on your inquiry about the LG Ultra Slim Portable DVD Writer with M-DISC™ Support, Model # GP55EX70 and will need some clarification. If it's an Android tablet, it will only support FAT File Systems and the DVD drive has a different file system. After Android KitKat, Google removed pendrive/flash drive driver from the OS kernel, so no pendrives or DVDs are supported officially...^IFV
