How to Troubleshoot In-Screen Fingerprint Recognition

Re-register Fingerprint

Note: If you registered your fingerprint with the front cover on, re-register with the cover removed. If a front cover/protective film with a protrusion pattern such as a silicone case/thick front protective film is used, some protrusion patterns may be recognized as fingerprints and the screen may unlock.

  1. Re-register Fingerprint.

    • Please re-register your fingerprint when the skin on your finger is no longer dry. Your finger can dry out even if it is briefly exposed to outdoor winter weather.
    • On the other end, if your fingerprint is registered while your finger is wet, the registered image may not be clear.
    • Please dry any moisture off your finger and re-register.
  2. Attach Protective Screen.

    • Registering images including characteristics of the protective film may decrease the success rate of matching images.
    • Please re-register your fingerprint while the protective film is attached. If you don’t know the location of the fingerprint sensor on AOD [always-on display], touch the screen once and you can see the fingerprint sensor location accurately. Please cover the area sufficiently for it to recognize your fingerprint
    • It’s important to cover the entire green light area.
    • The fingerprint location display settings can be changed in fingerprint settings Settings > Lock Screen & Security > Fingerprints > Icon effect .
    • Note: If you registered your fingerprint with the front cover on, re-register with the cover removed. If a front cover/protective film with a protrusion pattern such as a silicone case/thick front protective film is used, some protrusion patterns may be recognized as fingerprints and the screen may unlock.

  3. Protective Screen Compatibility.

    • Performance my be impacted if the film transparency is too low.
    • Since the display takes a picture by reflecting light emitted by the photo, performance may degrade if the transparency is too low or if a film made of a material that disperses light is used
    • Using film that is too thick will also cause extreme light scattering.
    • If either of the above scenarios is true, please remove the protective film and re-register the fingerprint image and test unlocking the device with the film still removed.
  4. Check for dust, water, or damage.

    • Check for foreign matter or damage to the protective film at the location of the fingerprint sensor.
    • In the case of foreign matter, wipe it clean, and if the protective film is damaged, replace the protective film and re-recognize your fingerprint.
    • Using waterproof cases may interfere with fingerprint recognition.
    • If a waterproof case + phone protective film is added together, recognition problems may occur depending on the thickness and material of the waterproof case.

Note: Recognition requires at least 1 second of time.

    Other areas to check:

    1. If you have a wound on your finger or the surface isn’t smooth, register a different finger or wait until your finger is healed.
    2. Recognition requires at least 1 second of time.
    3. When recognizing, it is helpful to avoid strong direct sunlight as much as possible.
    4. The fingerprint sensor contains a function to learn fingerprint status during use so performance improves as you register and recognize your fingerprint.
    5. If you continue to recognize your fingerprint successfully but performance doesn’t improve and there’s a problem with recognition rate, please follow the instructions above and re-register your fingerprints evenly.

Note: LG Electronics is not responsible for fingerprint recognition problems that occur with products not supported by LG.
