Guide to fixing sound but no picture

Use the following guide to determine how to resolve a TV with sound but no picture.


Power on TV

1.

Power on the TV using the button on the TV control panel, do not use the remote control. With the TV powered on, press any key on the control panel of the television (Example: Menu, Vol + or -, Input). Does any menu or on screen display appear?

If display works, go to next step


  • If a display appears, continue to the next step.
  • No display indicates that the TV will require service.


Do external devices work properly?

Do any external devices connected to the TV work properly?

If only one device has issue, next step


  • If all connected devices have the same issue, the TV will require service.
  • If only one device has the problem, proceed to the next step.



What type of device is having problems

3.

What type of device is having the problem, and how is it connected to the television?

Note device with issue


  • Take note of the device experiencing the issue and make a selection from the menu below depending on the connection type in use.



Home Theater / Receiver Users

Note:

Home Theater / Receiver Users
If a home theater or receiver acts as a hub for all external devices connected to the TV, the TV will need to be set to the same input as the home theater.  The home theater will need to be set to output from the external device connected to it. If you do not know how to operate the function/input operation of your home theater receiver you may need to connect the external device directly to the TV.

HDMI Cable / Satellite Box, BDP, & Other Devices

Ensure proper input

1.

Ensure the TV is on the proper Input. If you are unsure, press the SMARTSmart button and select the Input Icon Input, and cycle through HDMI inputs until the correct one is located.


Verify connection

2.

Verify the connection is secure and retry:

Unplug external component


  • Unplug the external component (if possible) for 30 seconds.
  • Disconnect the HDMI cable from the TV and move it to an alternate port.
  • Plug the device back in, and change the TV to the new input to see if the issue is resolved.

Note:

If you're troubleshooting a cable box be sure to allow it time to boot up after power is restored.

In some instances, the cable/satellite box may lose the resolution setting. Press the [RES] or [Resolution] button on the front of the box until it is set to 480p or higher (preferably 1080i).

Note:

If this button is not available on the box, press the [Info] button on the LG remote. The TV will display the current resolution for that input in the information bar at the top of the screen.  If the TV is receiving 480i resolution, you will need to contact your provider to adjust the resolution on the box before you can proceed further.


Step 4

4.

If all above steps have failed, then your TV will require service.

HDMI PC or Laptop

Step 1



1.

Ensure the TV is on the proper Input. If you are unsure, press the SMARTSmart button and select the Input Icon Input, and cycle through HDMI inputs until the correct one is located.


Step 2

2.

Be sure the laptop is set to output a resolution supported by the TV. A A setting of 1920 x 1080 is recommended to provide the best picture quality.

Note:

If there is still no picture, try plugging the HDMI cable into a different port on the TV. Next, swap the TV to the appropriate input. If all steps have failed, the unit will require service.

Be sure the TV is on the correct component input.

Make sure the Red, Green, and Blue cables are routed correctly and inserted securely on both devices.

Unplug the external device (30 seconds) and then restore power.

Yes or No


  • If Yes:  Issue is resolved.
  • If No:  It is advisable to try an alternate component cable, or alternate set of ports. If this is not possible, then the set will require service.

Step 1

1.

Be sure the TV is on the AV input.


Step 2

2.

Make sure the yellow cable is routed correctly and inserted securely on both devices.


AV / Composite Connection

3.

Unplug the external device (30 seconds) and then restore power.


Step 4

4.

Is an image displayed along with the audio now?

Yes or No


  • If Yes:  Issue is resolved.
  • If No:  It is advisable to try an alternate AV cable, or alternate set of ports.  If this is not possible the set will require service.

DVI - HDMI

Step 1

1.

Ensure the TV is on the proper Input. If you are unsure, press the SMARTSmart button and select the Input Icon Input, and cycle to the HDMI input and press OK.


Step 2

2.

Be sure the laptop is set to output a resolution supported by the TV.  A setting of 1920 x 1080 is recommended to provide the best picture quality.


DVI - HDMI

Step 3

3.

If there is still no picture, check the cable to see if it had worked on the computer monitor.


Step 4

4.

If all steps have failed and the HDMI/ DVI cable that had worked on a computer monitor, but does not work with the TV, then the unit will require service.
