Setup USB Tethering
You can share your phone's data connection with your PC using a USB cable. |
Note: |
If your computer is running Windows 7 or a recent distribution of some flavors of Linux (such as Ubuntu), you can follow these instructions without any special preparation. If you’re running a version of Windows that precedes Windows 7, or some other operating system, you may need to prepare your computer to establish a network connection via USB. |
1. |
Connect your phone to your computer with a USB cable. |
2. |
From the Home screen, tap Apps > Settings > More... > Tethering & portable hotspot |
3. |
A USB icon appears at the top of the screen, and the notification Connected as a media device or Connected as a camera appears briefly at the top of the screen. For the purposes of tethering, the type of connection doesn't matter. |
4. |
Checkmark USB tethering |
5. |
Your computer is now sharing your device's data connection. |
6. |
To stop sharing your data connection, uncheck USB tethering or disconnect the USB cable. |
Note: |
USB tethering is not supported on computers running Mac OS. |

Setup Wi-Fi Hotspot
You can share your phone's data connection with up to eight phones at once by turning your phone into a portable Wi-Fi hotspot. |
1. |
From the Home screen, tap Apps > Settings > More... > Tethering & portable hotspot |
2. |
Checkmark Portable Wi-Fi hotspot |
3. |
After a moment, the device starts broadcasting its Wi-Fi network name (SSID), so you can connect to it with up to 8 computers or other devices. |
4. |
To stop sharing your data connection, uncheck Portable Wi-Fi hotspot. |
Note: |
Wi-Fi hotspot requires an appropriate data plan. Devices connected to your Mobile Hotspot use data from your data plan. Plans are not unlimited and significant charges may be incurred if the included data allowance is exceeded. Performance may vary depending on the number of devices connected and other factors. If you do not use a password, others will be able to use your Mobile Hotspot connection. |
Setup Bluetooth Tethering
If your computer can obtain an Internet connection via Bluetooth, you can configure your device to share it’s mobile data connection with your computer. |
1. |
Pair your phone with your computer. |
2. |
Configure your computer to obtain its network connection via Bluetooth. For more information, see your computer’s documentation. |
3. |
From the Home screen, tap Apps > Settings > More... > Tethering & portable hotspot |
4. |
Checkmark Bluetooth tethering |
5. |
To stop sharing your data connection, uncheck Bluetooth tethering. |
Setup Mobile networks
Mobile network settings allow you to adjust several aspects of the way your device uses mobile data. |
1. |
From the Home screen, tap Apps > Settings > More... > Mobile networks. |
Note: |
Depending on your carrier and service plan, your device may connect automatically to your carrier’s fastest available data network. Or you may need to insert a SIM card or configure details for a specific carrier. |
2. |
Checkmark Data enabled to turn data access on for all available mobile networks. |
3. |
Before turning this option off, which may cause your device or apps to stop functioning correctly, consider using the mobile data limit available under Apps > Settings > Data usage |
4. |
Ensure Data roaming is unchecked to prevent your device from transmitting data over other carriers’ networks when you leave an area that is covered by your own carrier’s networks. This is one way to to control expenses if your mobile data contract doesn’t include data roaming. |
Note: |
With Data roaming unchecked, you can still transmit data over Wi-Fi. |
Setup VPN
Virtual private networks (VPNs) allow entry into secured locale networks from the outside. Corporations, schools, and other institutions use VPNs to grant access to local network resources when people are not on campus or connected to a wireless network. Depending on the type of VPN you are using at work, you may be required to enter your login credentials or install security certificates before you can connect to your company's local network. You can get this information from your network administrator. Before you can initiate a VPN connection, you must set the screen lock option (Pattern, PIN, or Password only). |
1. |
From the Home screen, tap Apps > Settings > More... > VPN. |
2. |
Touch Add VPN profile |
3. |
In the form that appears, fill in the information provided by your network administrator. |
4. |
The VPN is added to the list on the VPN screen. |
1. |
From the VPN screen, touch the name of the VPN. |
2. |
In the dialog that opens, enter any requested credentials. |
4. |
When you’re connected to a VPN, a Status icon and notification are displayed continuously. To disconnect, touch the notification for the VPN connection. |
1. |
From the VPN screen, touch & hold the name of the VPN profile. |
2. |
In the dialog that opens, touch Edit profile. |
3. |
Edit the VPN settings you want. |
1. |
From the VPN screen, touch & hold the name of the VPN profile. |
2. |
Touch & hold the VPN you want to delete. |
3. |
In the dialog that opens, touch Delete profile. |
Some VPNs support an always-on mode that won't permit network traffic if the VPN connection stops working. This can be useful, for example, if you're moving between unsecured public Wi-Fi access points and want to make sure that your VPN connection remains active and secure. If an always-on VPN connection is lost, you'll receive a notification and won't be able to send or receive data until the connection is restablished. Before switching a VPN network to always-on mode: |
1. |
Get detailed setup instructions from your administrator. |
3. |
Connect to the network and, after providing your username and password, check Save account information. This is required for always-on VPNs. |
After you've set up the network and saved your account information: |
1. |
From the VPN screen, choose Menu > Always-on VPN. |
4. |
A permanent notification keeps you informed of the always-on VPN's status. |
5. |
To turn off always-on mode, choose Menu > Always-on VPN, then None and OK. |
