1Prior to 2017, the ASHRAE testing method was used to determine the BTU ratings for portable air conditioners. Since then, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) implemented and standardized a new test procedure. The DOE standardization accounts for the Seasonally Adjusted Cooling Capacity which is the amount of cooling provided to the indoor conditioned space when measured under specified ambient conditions. The DOE BTU rating may be up to 42% lower when compared to the previous ASHRAE BTU method for the same product.
