What People Are Saying

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Soundbar I originally had a smaller size 5.1 sound bar from another company. I wanted to upgrade to an Atmos type system and decided on this LG version to keep things simple. Amazing sound! I’m glad I switched to this one. The Atmos system did not disappoint. You are really surrounded by all the noises/sounds being played. The sub-woofer provides that “umpf” needed to replicate low frequency sounds. I really enjoy watching TV these days. To really appreciate Atmos you’ll need a Dolby Atmos source. I managed to download some Dolby clips off the internet and played them through my HDTV via the USB port. I couldn’t believe the realism it provided.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice looking and spacious. I've had this for months and can now say that I like having this setup vs a more traditional side by side fridge. The space it provides is nice.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good sound and easy setup This is a very good soundbar. It is a lot better than the TV speakers and the setup was very simple. Great sound and bass after some run-time.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The best I've heard ever Got this acouple weeks ago and I must tell you that it is the best thing I could of done to match my lg oled b7a. Just a few days ago i got the spk8-s rear wireless speaker kit and now I'm just so shocked at this set up. I added a XBOX ONE X AND A PS4 PRO to this set up and man is it awesome. I look forward to movie time and game time like never before!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good features, horrible instruction manual I bought this to replace an aging surround sound system and so far I have no complains aside from it needing a better instruction manual. The suppied instructions fail to tell you that you need to go into the TV settings to change the sound output to the device. They fail to explain the various sound modes either. Also, I think there may have been a mix up on the device as well. If you stream music from your phone and use the music sound setting it doesn’t sound right, there is barely any bass response. Also, the unit does have pretty good bass response however you shouldn’t have to turn up the bass setting to max to get it, let’s call that a manufacturer error. Additionally, there should be some kind of on screen setup for the device when it is paired to one of the modern OLED TV’s with WebOS, how they missed that is anyone’s guess. Once you get it up and running and calibrated to your liking, it is a great unit. I am going to buy the options satellite speakers now, calling it a full surround sound or even Atmos without them should be false advertising. It is not really surroundsound if all the sound is coming from one direction, the immersive nature is non existent.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Pretty good so far. Great sound. Not the best Atmos experience, but good enough for a sound bar. I have had some Atmos issues when starting a video where there is a skipping effect, but I need to troubleshoot further to determine if it's the TV output or the sound bar.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Meh... I purchased this item 2 days ago and I have put it through every type of test I can. The major problem that I have is that the soundbar has 2 side-firing surround speakers on the soundbar which totally drown out the rear surround. If you turn the surround volume up, it increases the volume of both the side firing speakers and the rears. It seems to be a very poor design choice. There needs to be a way to turn off the side firing speakers if you add the wireless rear surrounds. I must add that other than this one design flaw the speakers sound great!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great sound I bought this a few months ago. I was skeptical with the surround capabilities of ATMOS but I must say I am pleased with the result!

I just purchased an OLED55C8AUA TV and a SK9Y Sound Bar.  I have DirecTV as my satellite provider.  What is the recommended connections of these three components?  Does the DirecTV box connect to the TV or to the Sound Bar?

What is the best wiring hookup for an LG OLED 65” C8 TV, SK9Y Soundbar and UBK90 disc player to take advantage of Dolby Atmos through Dolby True HD? Should I pass through the soundbar via HDMI/ARC or HDMI direct to TV and return to the SK9Y via Optical?

Asked by: JohnA88
It is always best to route your audio source directly to your audio processing device. Many times a Dolby Atmos disc is encoded in such a way that if the audio processor isn’t capable of Atmos, it will decode Dolby TrueHD. We hope this information helps. If you are in need of any assistance, have additional questions, or would just like to see our helpful tips, check us out on Twitter @LGUSSupport or you can give us a call at 800-243-0000. ^CP

Am I gonna get Dolby atmos for my dolby atmos bluray player if I connect the OLEDB7a to this soundbar using the hdmi arc while the bluray is connected to any hdmi tv? I mean is it possible to just pass the sound over arc for all the hdmi tv ports?

Asked by: iali
Since the release of HDMI v.1.4, ARC was made available over one channel, and a number of advancements have occurred that have caught up to and surpassed the initial capabilities of the specification. First, the bandwidth of streaming audio has gone up, enabling many over-the-top streaming services to move to a more robust Dolby Digital+ codec for online streaming, requiring greater bandwidth that has stretched the limits of ARC. The current ARC was designed to pass a maximum of approximately 1 Mbps (it was originally intended to be 384 Kbps), which is just big enough for DD+ but is insufficient to handle newer and more robust lossless surround sound formats that arrived later, including Dolby TrueHD, DTS Master Audio, and others. On top of these object-based audio formats including Dolby Atmos and DTX:S were introduced, bringing over-head height channels and other 3D sound effects to home theaters. Dolby Atmos can be encoded as part of either a Dolby TrueHD stream or a Dolby Digital+ stream, depending on capacity/bandwidth requirements. When encoded in either version, the stream contains metadata to extract and place objects in relevant positions around the audience. Dolby TrueHD is a lossless variable bit-rate codec. In the same way, an Atmos encoded Dolby Digital+ stream contains metadata to extract and place objects, except that format is lossy. (So the Atmos information is compressed in that implementation, lack some of the depth and dimensionality of the lossless version). Dolby Digital+ uses a more efficient compression technique than Dolby Digital at data rates from 96Kbps to 6 Mbps. It can also support up to 7.1 discrete channels, instead of just 5.1 for Dolby Digital. On the LG B7P OLED 4K HDR Smart TV - 55" Class (54.6" Diag), Model # OLED55B7P you can send the decoded Atmos surround information in the TV out over the HDMI ARC connector, but only when the signal is carried in a lossy Dolby Digital+ surround sound stream. and like the other 2017 OLEDs that have a built-in Dolby Atmos Decoder that support the lossless Dolby TrueHD decoding format internally, but this must be delivered into the television over a non-ARC HDMI input for decoding internally by the television. Unlike the other 2017 LG OLEDs, the LG B7A OLED 4K HDR Smart TV - 55" Class (54.6" Diag), Model # OLED55B7A is the only 2017 OLED model that does not feature a built-in Dolby Atmos Decoder. It only supports Dolby Atmos Passthrough so the TrueHD signal has to be input over a non-ARC HDMI input from a supporting device like a Blu-ray player. However, there is no way to get the Atmos/True HD signal back out of the TV over the present ARC. The sound can only be enjoyed through LG’s built-in sound system or integrated soundbar (like the one in the flagship W7 OLED). The solution to all this will come with the delivery of the new HDMI 2.1 specification. With that implementation a new enhanced Audio Return Channel (eARC) will be added, with ample bandwidth to support the full Dolby Atmos/Dolby TrueHD (and DTS:X/DTS-HD Master Audio) experience. It is also designed to get rid of the many device recognition and handshake issues that plagued the original ARC implementation. Currently, manufacturer's are still waiting for the HDMI Group to put out testing specifications and for supporting SoC’s to emerge, before anything is going to happen. That isn’t expected to begin into some time in the fall. Meanwhile, most of the OTT streaming services carrying Atmos surround sound today – these include: Netflix, Amazon, Vudu etc. — are using the lossy Dolby Digital+ implementation of Dolby Atmos, leaving Ultra HD Blu-ray of HD Blu-ray players as the primary way to listen to Atmos-supporting soundtracks in a lossless Dolby TrueHD environment...^IFV
