From the Home screen, tap Apps
> Settings
> About phone

Scroll down and view the current Build number.

Fully charge the battery.

Save any important data before updating the software on your device. Any data not saved may be erased; i.e. contacts, images, etc. To backup your data, connect your phone to a PC via the USB cable. After connecting, swipe down from the top of the screen to open the notification panel and confirm you are connected as a media device (MTP). Copy personal folders to your PC, i.e. DCIM (photos, videos), Downloads, Music, etc.
You may also download a third party backup solution using the Play Store on your device.
Note: Calling and messaging functions are not available during the update process. The entire upgrade process varies depending on software package size and your internet connection speed.
Software Update

When the software update is available, the update icon
will display in the status bar at the top of the screen. Swipe down from the top and tap the notification.

Tap Restart & install, the device will countdown to 0, then reboot to start the software update.

The phone will reboot in system update mode. A progress bar under a green android will display the upgrade progress.

When the upgrade is complete, the phone will restart and transition through a series of alerts stating Android is upgrading.
Troubleshooting
If you have not been notified of an available software update, you can manually check if one is available.

From the Home screen, tap Apps
> Settings
> About phone

Tap Software System updates > Check now to manually check for a new update.

You will be prompted if a new software update is available. Continue from Software Update, step 1.
