Updating Firmware - Blu-ray

Firmware updates are released on a regular basis for network enabled Blu-ray Players. These updates are used to enhance current features, fix bugs, and in some cases add additional applications to the device.

*An Internet connection is required to perform a firmware update.
If you do not have Internet available on the Blu-ray Player, you may need to perform a Manual Firmware Update.

Press the Home/Smart button on your remote. Usually, when a firmware update is available, a message will appear in the bottom right of the Home screen. You can also manually check for updates by choosing Settings from the right side.

Zoom In
From the Settings menu, navigate to the Others tab, then select Software.
Next, choose Update and the system will check for available firmware updates.
If the check is successful, but there is no update available, you will see the screen below.

Zoom In
If the check is successful, and there is an update available, you will be presented with information about the new version. Click OK to start the update.

Zoom In
While you see this screen, the update is downloading. If the download freezes, it is safe to turn the player off, then back on, while this screen is showing.
Once you see the Updating message, the firmware is being installed. Do not turn off or unplug the unit while this screen is showing.

Zoom In
A final Updating progress bar will be shown, and the unit will automatically power off when it completes.

Note: The unit will not automatically turn back on after the update. If you need the Blu-ray Player to turn back on, you'll need to use the Power button.

Firmware can be updated manually by downloading the update file from lg.com and placing it on a USB storage device or CD/DVD.

To perform the update, you'll need:

  • A USB flash drive or writable/re-writable CD/DVD with at least the size of the firmware update of available storage(check the file size on your product support page).
  • A Computer with Internet access.
  • A CD/DVD burner if using that method.

Preparing the Installation File

  1. Locate the Product Support Page for your device by entering the model number into the lg.com search field(near the top-right).
  2. Download the latest firmware file from the Software Update section of the support page.
  3. Unzip the downloaded firmware file:
    1. Open the Downloads folder on your PC.
    2. Right-click on the firmware file.
    3. Choose Extract all... or Extract here on some operating systems.
  4. Open the USB drive or CD/DVD folder to the root directory.
When you insert the media, click on either Burn files to disc for CD/DVD or Open folder to view files for USB.

Note: If using CD/DVD, choose With a CD/DVD player when asked how you want to use the disc. Do Not Choose Like a USB flash drive!

  5. Create a folder named UPG_ALL for USB devices (for CD/DVD, advance to step 6):
    1. Right-click an empty area in the folder.
    2. Choose New > Folder.
  6. Place the extracted file from step 3 into the UPG_ALL folder for USB, or to the root of a CD/DVD (the file extension should be .ROM).
  7. If using CD/DVD, choose Write to disc; if using USB, you're ready to perform the update.

Applying the Update

  1. Turn on the Blu-ray Player and wait until the Home screen appears.
  2. Insert the USB storage device or CD/DVD created using the steps above.
  3. The Update window will appear, then press OK to begin installing.

Warning: Do Not turn off or unplug the unit during the installation process.

  4. The unit will automatically turn off when the update is complete.
    • Some updates are large and can take time to download, especially over slower Internet connections. If the percentage is increasing, please let it continue.
    • If the percentage is not increasing, ensure the Blu-ray Player is within range of the wireless router with minimal obstacles between.
Note: The wireless receiver built in to the Blu-ray Player may not be as strong as other devices.
    • If the screen says Downloading, Restart the Blu-ray Player and wireless router (unplug them then plug them back in).
    • If the screen says Updating, do not unplug it!
    • If the issue persists, Contact Us.
